It's another #writerwednesday and with the book discussion of book 2 in The House of BeJeweled coming up, I thought I would share a scene from Bejeweled: What A Tangled Web We Weave. EXCERPT CHAPTER: A TURN OF EVENTS “You may not know me, but I’m—” Olivia stuck out her hand and took the soft, warm, brown one in her own. “I know who you are. And to what do I owe this pleasure, Ms. Kirkland?” Olivia asked, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. She had known there was a reason behind her coming to BeJeweled today for a hair appointment. She had never visited the salon before, and Olivia was apprehensive. She did not like feeling like her stylists or salon were being used to gain a hot story. “Straight from the hip. I like that. Well, as you know, I have a talk show, All About Atlanta. My show features guests from the music and entertainment industries as well as local celebrities. I would be remiss to acknowledge the fact that I have been following your story in the news rather closely. In all honesty, I think they’re on a witch hunt. There has been some time since their hottest gossip lead, and thanks to yours truly, I no longer am providing those.” “So what is it that you want or need from me, Ms. Kirkland?” Olivia’s arms were folded across her breasts, and she stood in a protective stance. Cocking one head to the side, she wanted the woman to get to her point. “Please call me Chris.” “Alright, Chris it is, then. What is it that I can do for you?” Olivia was not one to play games. And where she was usually patient and kind, her shop, stylists, and name were all under attack, and she had no time to coddle anyone. She was in a mothering and protective mode. “I would like to get your story out to the people.” Christina splayed her hands out in front of her as if indicating she was laying all her cards on the table. “Why? Running out of celebrity gossip?” “I don’t do gossip shows, Olivia. I interview celebrities, and I am committed to presenting them in a favorable light and helping them further their careers and not destroy them. I understand you must be wary about me approaching you and coming to your shop today. You have every right to be, and yes, I did plan it. Although you don’t know me, I would like to say, please trust me. I only want to share your story with the people. I was burned by the news reporters in this city…my own peers, if you will. No one was interested in giving me a fair shot. At least not in the beginning, and when someone did finally take a chance on me, I wanted to do everything I could to give that back to others when the opportunity presented itself. And I have done that in small ways here and there. But I have to admit; I’ve been quite angry at the way they have tried to drag your name through the mud. It reminded me of the witch hunt they were on when my own scandal broke out. As a news reporter, I knew we were to keep our noses clean at all times. But I slipped up. I read up on the history of the shop and spoke with a lot of business people in the hair industry and business owners that have been here in downtown Atlanta for some time. They all held your mother in high regard. Now I don’t know you from Adam, but I can tell you’re getting a bad rep. I don’t like the way the attack is panning out for your second salon opening in Buckhead. And if there’s anything I can do to help stop that attack, I want to do it.” “What’s in it for you, Chris? Revenge? A good story? What? I mean, if you’re wanting my attention, you have to keep it real with me. These people have attacked my stylists, my salon, and my reputation.” “I just want to bring the truth. I want to stop unfair assaults, and we need more salons in the Buckhead area to serve diverse clientele. I live, work, and play there and I believe you have a lot to bring to the Buckhead. I believe you have a beautiful spirit, and I don’t want to see you crushed. Trust me, reporters can be ruthless. I’ve been one for several decades now, so I know.” Christina folded her arms, raised an eyebrow, and waited to hear what Olivia’s response would be.
