I was super excited that my books arrived on last Wednesday! There was so much going on with my husband returning to town, and the kids starting school last week, I was on an emotional roller coaster ride. In some ways, it felt like Christmas in my household. Well, today, I'm sharing a bit of BeJeweled: What A Tangled Web We Weave with you. EXCERPT: Decisions, Decisions Nikki walked into her dark apartment that evening and placed her bags on the floor by the door. She walked to the bedroom and sat her purse on the dresser alongside her keys. She looked at the bed, where Carlos had passed out from drinking. Against everyone’s advice, she had returned home again. The day that Wesley took her back to her mother’s house when she had crashed his and Yvette’s date night, she had stayed with her mother a couple more nights. Her sister had spent some time with her and her mother. But no amount of prying the two of them did could get her to discuss the problems she had with Carlos. Her sister was excited about the baby on the way. Her mother was a bit more apprehensive. She had shared that as happy as she was to have a grandchild, she wondered if Nikki’s timing was right. People often thought they had the best advice. However, Nikki had learned that no one could really tell you how to live your life, or what was in your best interest. If they hadn’t walked that walk, how could they judge or advise you on what to do? Sure, it was easy for Ms. Olivia, Wesley, her mom, and sister, Yamile, to tell her to leave her husband and not go back. But she had made vows of for better or worse, and Carlos was right. She couldn’t keep running out every time the going got tough. Nope, she was determined this time she would stick with her husband and get him the help he needed. Looking down and rubbing her belly, she thought about the life growing inside of her. She didn’t know if it was Carlos’ or Wes’ baby, but what if God was sending this baby as a warning for her to get her life together? Maybe he was giving her and Carlos a second chance. She had prayed and asked for this baby. And it seemed as just when she began believing maybe God did exist after all, He had blessed her with this little miracle. She was going to purge all thoughts of Wes from her system. After all, he was just part of a fantasy world. What did she really know about him? He had obviously purged her from his system. He had gotten with Yvette either during, or just after, the time he had been with her. Nikki had been having strong feelings for Wesley for a while. But what was he really made of? And what would happen between them if things got tough? Maybe my feelings for him are just stemming off what me and Carlos have been going through, she thought not for the first time. What happens when the new wears off? Will I be bored of him, or will he get tired of me? No, I better stay home; at least I know what to expect here, she thought as she slipped out of her pullover sweater. Getting undressed down to nothing but her panties, Nikki walked over to the bed and joined her husband. Lying next to him, she ran her hands through his soft, curly brown hair and then kissed him on his eyelashes. He stirred slightly in his sleep and mumbled something indecipherable. The smell of the liquor on his breath sent a wave of nausea through Nikki that she couldn’t hold back. Jumping from the bed, she barely made it to the toilet before her dinner spewed forth. Grasping the hard toilet bowl between her hands, she sunk down onto the floor with tears stinging the back of her eyes and bile burning her throat. The cold, tile floor soothed her hot body as chills ran through her. Thinking about her life now and the little one growing inside of her, once again, Nikki knew that coming back home was the best decision after all. She forced herself up off the floor and brushed her teeth. Walking back into the bedroom, she determined in her mind that she would give it the best try she had ever given it. Pulling the covers back, she climbed into bed and nestled close to her husband, who didn’t realize his wife had returned home.
