CHARACTER PORTRAYAL:
Now meet the fierce women of BeJeweled. I often work to give my readers a visual depiction of what my characters look like in my head. And BeJeweled is no exception. If the novel were a movie and I had my choice the following ladies would be selected to portray my characters. So from left to right let me introduce to you the divas of BeJeweled:
Valarie Pettiford Tika Sumpter Jwaundece Candece Esther Baxter
as Olivia Morrison (owner) as Angel as Nikki Rory as Kianna
BEJEWELED EXCERPT:
Olivia was not ready for tonight by any means. She had agreed to have dinner with Raymond when he called this morning, but now she wasn’t so sure. When he had told her he was going to pop the question to Bethany 15 years ago her heart shattered, and she didn’t think she could ever pick up the pieces. Despite the initial hurt and pain she had started dating again, and she had pushed him to the back of her heart, and she danced around that piece of her life very finely.
She had never blamed him because she had never shared her feelings with him. They had been friends for a long time at that point confiding in each other about so many things, such as their dating lives, secret fears, hopes, dreams, and disappointments; he had never made a move and neither had she and they had remained friends. Olivia had watched Raymond play the field with many women; yet, somehow she never dreamed he would get serious with anyone. And she was hoping that if he did, it would be with her. But with his announcement of his intentions to ask Bethany to marry him came the realization that it was never to be.
She closed her accounts payable software on her laptop and released a deep sigh. She had to do something different, something that required little thought. After a moment she knew exactly what she needed…a little beauty shop gossip. She walked to the hair salon area and sat in her empty chair, as she watched Tyrone’s antics as he told a story about his latest flopped romance.
“…that he was married! Can you believe that? I don’t mess with married men and how dare he wait to tell me about that,” Tyrone said with a look of exasperation on his face.
“Umm since when Tyrone, before or after the police officer?” Belinda asked, pulling the straightening comb out of her client’s hair, and turning to face Tyrone.
The other ladies laughed and Tyrone struggled to contain his own laughter as he snapped his fingers before correcting Belinda. “That was different, honey child,” he stated.
“How? Oh that’s right, you wuz in luvvvv,” Belinda teased with one hand on her hip. She made a puckering face and kissing noises for a moment.
“Well I was, or at least I thought I was, girl” Tyrone explained.
“Mmhmm until his wife walked in on y’all,” Belinda said.
“Look that was a serious time in my life. I had no clue that man was married. And then afterwards I was terrified to drive anywhere for a whole year. I swear his entire force harassed me for that entire year.”
“What happened to him anyway?” Angel asked.
"Chiilldd, last I heard he had moved back to South Carolina and joined the force there.” Tyrone said, shaking his head.
“And his wife?” Angel asked.
“She stayed here with their two daughters. When she came home that day that was the first time that I had visited his home and we were in the guest room. I should’ve known something wasn’t right, he had told me he lived with his sister and her kids. I just couldn’t believe he did me like that,” Tyrone stated, reminiscing on another time in his life.
“Did you like that? What about his wife, she was the real victim?” Kianna asked, turning around rolling her eyes.
“Look don’t get me wrong, I feel bad for her, too. But I didn’t do anything, he was the one in the wrong. He hurt me, too, just like he hurt her. I feel bad for her and their kids, but right now my focus is on my pain…okay baby doll?” he said to Kianna in a strained tone.
“I just hope y’all wrapped it up is all I’m sayin’. That’s just nasty. Y’all don’t care ‘bout what y’all do to these women out here. You got all these wives and girlfriends out here that aren’t protected. They out here trusting these trifling men and don’t know what their men be up to,” Kianna said, rolling her eyes again and focusing on her client’s perm.
“That’s interesting, Kianna,” Angel said in a mild tone.
“What’s that?” Kianna asked rising to the bait turning to face Angel.
Olivia looked between the two of them wondering where this conversation was leading. She had a strong urge to stop it now, but not wanting to make assumptions she let the conversation persist.
“You’re worried about wives and girlfriends now? That’s never stopped you before. I hope you and all your dudes wrapped it up,” Angel snapped back.
"That’s none of your business, miss lady,” Kianna said.
“And Ty’s is none of yours,” Angel retorted.
“You know what, let me tell you something, you need to be worried about what yo’ man doing instead of everybody else’s business, or should I say who he’s doing. I bet you don’t’ even know where he at right now,” Kianna said, walking towards Angel’s booth pointing her finger at Angel.

BeJeweled is a treasure chest of colorful characters, interesting plotlines and rich, deep emotions. Chelle strikes gold with this first book in what is going to be a great series centered around a trendy beauty shop in Atlanta. When you mix all the people who work there with their crazy customers and cheating spouses, you have a bubbling pot of drama and desperation. Chelle writes with heart and humor, and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Normally I only read Spiritual/Self-help books. However, this book was amazing. Including the drama, this was the most inspirational, rewarding, entertaining, down-to-earth, close-to-home, encouraging, drama-filled, book I have ever read! LITERALLY!!! Chelle Ramsey, this book has encouraged me soo much to strive for what is right, to continue to walk in faith, and to follow my dreams! I can't wait for the next book by CHELLE RAMSEY!!!
