Lighting the Fire Within...

"Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of a fire." W. B. Yeats

Today is the first day of school for my children and they are more excited than I am. Typically, I am never excited for summer vacation to end. I enjoy having my children around the house, although they drastically increase our electric, water, and grocery bill. Yet, they were ready to return and for us we are experiencing another first.

Our daughter is a junior this year in high school, and our baby boy is a freshman. This is his first year in high school and for the first time where they were on the same levels, they are not attending the same school. She's no longer there to watch over her baby brother as he embarks upon another of his 'firsts' as she was in elementary and middle schools.

My husband and I gathered our children together last night and prayed over them. We have been discussing all summer long the changes we would like to see enacted in their academic careers this year. We understand for them to be successful we have to prepare them for success. We must provide every resource they need to succeed, which includes equipping them with the most essential tool of all...prayer.

We want them to be comfortable in being the light in a darkened room, shining their lights brightly that the Lord Almighty would be glorified. Therefore, we discuss and address any concerns they have, and we try as often as possible to lead by example. We trust the Lord to fill them with a fresh anointing each new day and that they will walk in the light of His glory both in and out of school.

The academics, extracurricular, and other agendas will all fall into place. For not only do we constantly strive to light a fire underneath them for their education, but for their spiritual walk as well. For we know that when we delight in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart. Psalm 37:4

What does crazy look like? Let Deborah tell it, it's the reflection that looks back at her in the mirror. She has a career she loves, two beautiful children and a handsome and successful husband. Her life seems to be the blueprint almost every woman she knows would kill to live. But working full-time, being a full-time mother, full-time wife and a full-time Sunday only Christian seems to be taking its toll on her. With all the scheming and shenanigans Deborah orchestrated to get this lifestyle, she might have to come up with a whole set of new ones to maintain it.

Lynox is Deborah's husband who she thanks God for putting back into her life after a game of cat and mouse that defies the laws of romance. He feels that all Deborah needs is to let her hair down, maybe make some new friends and live a little. When Deborah agrees and then suspects Lynox of having an affair with the woman that he suggested she form a friendship with, will he live to regret his own advice?

Can't Trust Her...

When the truth is like a smoking gun, Angel cannot ignore what stares her directly in the face. The truth can hurt or it can kill.

Black and Kianna’s back with a revelation that's so explosive. Can Olivia and her team handle what’s coming their way? The House will never be the same.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER_CAN'T TRUST HER

“Come on, in,” Angel invited, holding the door open for him.

“Where’s my lil’ guy?” he asked, looking around expecting TJ to come running shouting ‘Daddy’ at any minute.

“My mom’s house,” she said in a choked voice.

It was the first time Black had directly looked at her. Her eyes were swollen and red, as if she’d been crying.

The pile of hair on her head was tangled and disheveled. She looked as if she had just gotten out of the bed.

“Angel! What’s wrong, babe?” he asked, reaching for her, but she pulled away. “TJ, okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah. He’s cool.” She turned her back on him and walked into her living room.

“Then what’s wrong?” Black stopped in mid-stride and stared at her.

Angel sat on the couch staring at the space between her feet.

Black’s heart broke watching her. To him she looked so hollow, as though she had lost her soul. Who did this to her? Was it Alex? I swear if it was he’s a dead man, he thought.

“You called me this morning and told me for the next month or so, some things might not be what they appear to be.”

“Yeah.” His stomach begin to tighten.

“You said some things might be lies…did you know Kianna was coming to my salon?”

Her voice was so low Black had to struggle to hear her. “What?”

Angel held her head up and stared at him with red-rimmed eyes. “I asked—”

“Nah, I heard what you asked. I can’t believe…what the fuck!” Black pulled his phone from its holster on his hip and begin punching in Kianna’s number, as he paced back and forth.

“Hang up, Black,” Angel whispered. Then more ferociously, “Black! Hang up! This is between you and me.”

He hit the end button on his phone and looked at Angel trying to gauge her mood. He had expected Kianna would pull something, but he wasn’t sure what it would be. He had hoped she wouldn’t strike against Angel so soon. But he should have known better. All she’d needed was a little leverage, and he knew he had given her that when he had agreed to take those pictures. Under duress.

“She said you two were back together.” Refusing to meet his glance, Angel stared at the floor again.

“Nah, Ang, it’s—”

“Stop…just stop,” she repeated, shaking her head and holding her hand up to stop his words. “I saw the pictures.”

“Look, babe. I told you things might look a certain way for a while, but you gotta trust me. Shit ain’t what it seem.”

“Maybe. Maybe not.” The softness of her voice betrayed the pain she felt. Tears were welling up in her eyes again, as she stared at him. Yet, he knew by the haze in her eyes she wasn’t seeing him, rather some image in her head.

“Them pictures ain’t what they look like, Ang,” he insisted, punching his fist in the palm of his hand punctuating each word.

“Those may not be…but the ones from more than ten years ago aren’t a lie, Black. You see you and her getting together now, isn’t a problem for me. After all, I told you to go on with your life. But what I do have a problem with, is discovering the seven years we were together were a lie. Not that it matters much, but the fact my life was a lie is the problem here.”

Fab Friday Features/Ey Wade...

7/22/2016

Picture
I had the pleasure of interviewing a very prolific author in the writing world recently. Today, Ey Wade is sharing glimpses into her life. Read our conversation to see what she shared about Ey the woman and the author on today's Fab Friday Feature...
Picture
CHELLE: Plotter or Pantser?

EY: I’m a pantser. I write all across the board in several genres and on whatever subject that comes to mind.

CHELLE: Tell us a little about yourself? Who is Ey the woman?

EY: I was born in Beaumont, Texas. That’s a couple of hours from Houston and reared as an Army brat. I’ll be 58 this year. That makes it my Beddian birthday. That’s when the age of your birth is the same as the year you were born. I was born in 1958. Don’t see me reaching that milestone again. My plan is to finally get a tattoo as celebration. There has always been the constant need to speak, and writing, telling stories was the way I choose to socialize.

I used to be an activist fighting for school buses and equality in my hometown. A big believer in the education system and was a part of PTA, Campus improvements, and even ran for a public office. Too many things within the system made me back away. I am the mother of three college graduated, adult daughters that were previously home-schooled and the drooling ‘Lovey' to a little boy.

CHELLE: You have accomplished quite a bit in your life. And how commendable that you are willing to make a stand and fight for what you believe in. With all of those things mentioned in your past and current life, share with us how do you create work-life balance being an author?

EY: At the moment, I have a lot of issues with Sciatica and other back issues, so I’m home a lot. Writing has become pretty easy.

CHELLE: Describe a day around your house and in your ordinary life where writing is not key.

EY: Hmmm I wake,  and do a little writing or brainstorming, between 4-5 a.m., step onto patio and water the plants, stand and watch the sky, scour the internet, answer emails, promote my works and watch TV and socialize with the family.

CHELLE: I love your schedule!!! :D

Most authors have a routine they settle into when they prepare to write. Yet, others toss routine out the window and go with the flow. Tell us about your writing routine.

EY: Toss and flow, that’s how I go. I keep a pen and paper near because I focus better if I’m old school writing, but nothing is carved in stone.
Picture
CHELLE: It seems to me as if that method encourages rather than stems the flow of creativity. It’s also my preferred method. Pandora or Spotify? What would we find on your playlist?

EY: I’m not on either. All that has been on my iPod for years, is what I like to listen to. All other music I grab while riding in the car listening to whatever the girls listen to.

CHELLE: Did you keep a journal or diary as a child growing up? If so, what secret did you not want your parents to read?

EY: No, I didn’t keep a journal. Once the day was over, I wanted to forget it.

CHELLE: Leave the past in the past and live for today. Okay. I like that concept. Ey, your works of art are very diverse and unique. I noticed you write across a variety of genres from women’s fiction to young adult to children’s books. What genre is your favorite? What caused you to cross genres and which would you say is the most fulfilling for you?

EY: I’d have to say my favorite genre are the picture books. Guess it stems from being a parent and working in the childcare profession for nearly 40 years. The mind of the child flips from humorous to genius so quick, I’m drawn to it. As for what caused me to crisscross over- I’m not a focused person, lol. I just go with the flow and whatever character or idea that crosses my mind, I follow it. Much like when I have a verbal conversation.

CHELLE: So it seems that you stay true to the character of you. Regarding the marketing of your books, would you say one particular genre does better than the others? If so, why do you think that is?

EY: Oh my God, I can’t answer anything about marketing when it comes to sales. I’m having a hard time with it all. Well, actually it has gotten a little bit better since I’ve left the small publisher and moved back to being totally independent. Or it can simply be, that now I can see what’s going on behind the scenes and where I need to direct my promotions.

CHELLE: I wish someone would prescribe a magic formula, or perhaps bottle it and sell it. Marketing is definitely a challenge area for many authors. What authors have influenced your writings?

EY: I can’t honestly say I was influenced by anyone. I just know I have stories in my head and want to get them out.

CHELLE: If you could pair up with another author to write, who would you choose and why?

EY: I would choose Tyler Perry. Mainly because he has a lot of influence and a superior platform. I have stories and ideas that I believe will take him from his norm and lift him to a higher level.

CHELLE: If your latest release were turned into a movie, what actors would you select to play the starring roles, and what music would comprise the soundtrack?

EY: I honestly hadn’t thought about it with these last two books.

CHELLE: How do you handle writer’s block?

EY: If I become stalled in one manuscript, I move on to another. I have so many other stories waiting in the wings that I chose to work on a plot that’s calling to me at that particular moment. For some reason, it tends to make the inhabitants of the other world jealous and they call me back with interesting scenes.

CHELLE: I love that and I can definitely relate. Mountains or the beach?

EY: I prefer mountains, hopefully there is vegetation and shade. I love plants and can’t handle burning in the sun.

CHELLE: You’re one of the few visitors who preferred the mountains. That’s my choice too, because of the seclusion and beauty. It stirs creativity. Provide one marketing tip for upcoming authors that has worked for you.

EY: Join and/or establish Facebook groups. The knowledge, support, and camaraderie is outstanding.

CHELLE: I agree. Especially in groups, such as B.R.A.B. and See Ya On The Net promo group. If there was one thing you would want your readers to know after reading your works, what would it be?

EY: I would love for readers to have a new or open perspective on daily assumptions on how life and the reactions of others, work. Things are rarely if ever, what they seem on the surface.

CHELLE: I agree. I think people often jump to conclusions a bit too readily. More often than not if they were to examine their reaction they would realize their analysis of a given situation is based on their perspective and how they would handle the situation, versus reality.

Writers often have to forsake time with friends and family when deadlines are looming, or the creative muse is flowing. What one person has been your greatest supporter on your publishing journey?

EY: Even though my daughters are awesome, my grandson is the best. When I sit to write, he tends to grab his pencil and paper or his kiddie tablet and sits near me. Can’t say he’s a quiet supporter, but we struggle together.

Picture
CHELLE: That’s so sweet! I absolutely love that. Maybe you’re grooming a little writer in the making. Describe your idea of the perfect “me-time.”

EY: Going to the salon and getting my nails done, coming back to a quiet house and doing nothing beyond turning TV and floating between watching and enjoying the solitude.

CHELLE: We live life beautifully inspired here, at The Beautifully Inspired Blog. Leave us with an inspirational post, comprised of three words.

EY: “Life Inspires Creativity.”

CHELLE: Well people, you’ve been invited into the exclusive world of Ey. Read on as she shares more about her books and where you can connect with her in the book world.

Info on my books. My latest novels are titled Ismet’s Honor and Ribbons & Belle. I call them companion novels. They have some of the same main characters, but are stand alone and not a series.

RIBBONS & BELLE: Gorgeous, dedicated fertility counselor Tyson Ribbons, has admired and loved embryologist, Anabelle “Belle” Lee for a long time. When she comes in for counseling he fights everything within him not to deter her from her plans. Doesn’t stop his heart from wishing it could be him fulfilling her desire.

Anabelle Lee, mourning her inability to have a child of her own-suffered through two miscarriages, a heartbreaking late-term abortion, and a soul crushing divorce. As an embryologist, she has protected the potential life of many frozen specimens, and lived envious of the women choosing InVitro fertilization as their form of reproduction.

After a bit of encouragement from her best friend, and counseling from the very perfect Dr. Ribbons, Anabelle takes steps to fulfill her desire to become a mother.

Problem is, the announcement brings more of a shock than a gift.

ISMET’S HONOR: Sunny Verdi Reyes, has always wanted the “good-life.” Husband, home, lots of children. After cheering on her best friend and fellow embryologist Belle, through her successful quest for her dream, she wanted those things even more.

Unfortunately, Sunny broke the heart of her fantasy years earlier and it would take more than wishful thinking to get him back.

At 17, unable to voice his opinion against an unwanted abortion, Ismet Honorable O’Neal ran from the girl who killed his dream of the perfect life and the white picket fence.

Now he spends his time aiding other men in being the voice in the lives of their children.

Years later, he returns and Sunny is waiting.

She’s going to need more than the love in her eyes to repair the fences.

The inspiration to writing Ribbons and Belle came from the controversy of abortions and the vitriol in which the women are attacked. People tend to overlook the fact there may be medical reasons that make the ending of a life detrimental for the mother’s health. Ismet’s Honor was born after a beta reader finished Ribbons & Belle and wished there was a story about Sunny. I decided to make it more about the father and what his wishes may have entailed and how abortions also affect the father’s to be.

His Ex-Wife...

Today's #writerwednesday takes a trip back to The House of BeJeweled. We'll see what's going on in Angel's world. Black is back and Kianna's not far behind. Did I say Black and Kianna were back? Yes, I did and you know what that means? Drama!

Black looked at Angel standing firm and rigid. She had left her chair to stand at the window and continued looking out as if she were in a place of her own.

“Nah, it ain’t even like that. You already know that. You my girl, and we gon’ always be cool, but you know what it is,” Black muttered.

“I hear you now. But I want to hear the tune you’re singing when you get out that bed. Or maybe not, you’ve been known to do some miraculous things in the bed. Especially when you work the middle the way you do,” Kianna laughed.

“Come on, girl. That’s enough, all that ain’t even called for. You’re not gonna speak to Angel?” he asked, pointing his hand at his ex-wife and changing the subject.

“And you want me to do that becauuuse?” With her arms crossed in front of her ample breasts, Kianna lifted an eyebrow and one lip in distaste.

“You know what? Black, I’ll let you have your moment. You can entertain your drama. I need to go home and check on our son.” Angel grabbed her purse and walked past Kianna.

“Aye, Angel. Babe, come back,” he called out.

“Black…don’t worry. I will be back and we’ll have our moment to talk. Entertain her for now, while you still have the time.” Angel looked over her shoulder at him one last time.

New Oceans...

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide

Welcome to another Motivational Monday Moment!

How often have you refused to step into new opportunities because you feared the unknown? Staying within a self-imposed comfort zone is how many of us choose to live our lives. We know what to expect, we know where the borders lie, and we are aware of potential dangers.

It's easy when we understand what's expected of us, and what our limitations are in a situation to remain comfortable in that space. Thinking of moving beyond the boundaries can stir up fear, turmoil, confusion, and anxiety over the unknown.

Yet, there is so much in the world that is waiting to be discovered. Not only are there unknown variables that have been untapped, but there is so much growth within you waiting to be revealed. Those oceans waiting to be discovered are the depths of growth within you. You cannot go to deeper levels, expand your boundaries, increase your knowledge and understanding until you move beyond the self-imposed comfort zone you have created.

You have to have faith in the Lord and belief in yourself to find the courage to step into the unknown. Lately, I have been facing some new changes that are coming my way. While, I am excited about them every now and then fear and doubt creeps in. I have to recall that those feelings are not from the Lord, but from the enemy.

A Scripture I have been meditating on is: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

Each time I think of that Scripture the doubt and fear recedes. I cannot let the safety of my comfort zone, become the confines by which I am restrained to self-imposed limitations.

Where are your limitations and how far are you willing to push the limits to obtain growth? Don't push...just take the limits off!

Daffodil Simmons knows how the world works. She’s the spider, all the world is a fly. She has spent her life spinning webs, using people for personal gain. And now, she’s about to spin her biggest one yet – for vengeance. She'll do whatever it takes to get revenge on the two men who abandoned her: her father, and her former lover. When she blackmails her half-sister Leah Westwood’s ex-lover to do her bidding, she tightens her fist around his will and brings him into submission to her plans.

Vincent Miller hates that Daffodil has a noose around his neck, forcing him to do whatever she wants. But he’ll do anything to steal Leah back from Jacob Westwood, the man who destroyed his life, even if it means making a deal with a blue-eyed spider. Yet as Daffodil spins her web, he finds himself entrapped by a silk of a very different kind and intrigued by a woman who only sees him as expendable prey.

Everything is going according to plan until another spider, a ghost from Daffodil's past, begins to interfere with their web. It's a battle of wits against a powerful foe. When it comes time to make the ultimate choice, can Daffodil lay aside everything she’s ever known… for something even greater? Can Vincent set aside his need for revenge to go after what’s in front of him?

Staying True To You...

7/13/2016

Picture
This #writerwednesday I wanted to share something that was on my heart. It's always important that we stay true to who we are. As individuals whether seeking our dreams, living life, pursuing a goal, or whatever. This is especially true as a writer. Trying to go against the grain will never work.

Whenever you find yourself doing something for all the wrong reasons, and you don't have peace within it's time to back away. Last week I had the opportunity to do some ghostwriting, which is something I am definitely interested in. However, the proposals offered to me pushed me out of my comfort zone.

As writers we often hear about how we should not try to write in a genre that isn't our flow, because it will be felt by the reader. You don't follow the trend, but you stay real and true to you. Well, this was not that situation. I have no doubt that I could have rocked both projects out. These specific situations challenged my spiritual journey and would have been in direct conflict with other things I'm working on, as well as the road I'm traveling.

I was very hesitant about whether or not to do the work, and actually began flowing in the direction of just doing these two projects, and not continuing afterwards. Pushing aside all of my misgivings and doubts I began to justify the wrong decision. Finally, Thursday night just before I accepted the final contract I sat down and did some soul-searching. Holy Spirit was very clear on what I was supposed to do. Of course, I took it to Marvelous and we discussed it. Regardless of how much I wanted him to help me in my decision, he refused. He stated afterwards, he did not want to interfere with my free will. It had to be my decision. In the end I understood and it was so freeing and such a wonderful revelation!

I continued struggling on it, sent up a small prayer and before it left my lips good I had another urging from Holy Spirit, stronger than ever. I stopped and in worry I began to type up my rejection offering an explanation of my refusal. I was concerned about how one particular person would feel about this. However, in the end not only did the person wholeheartedly agree with my decision, but I had PEACE in the end.

Let me back up to say that when I first began really struggling with the situation I recalled someone once saying, it's okay to back up out of something when you realize God is not in it. And for me, He definitely was not in this situation. I encourage you on your journey, always be true to yourself. Stand firm for what you believe in, as my husband always says. And never sell yourself out, or your soul for a momentary thrill, a dollar amount, or to please man. Always seek to give your best in whatever you do, and be true to your calling.

Be blessed!

This Fab Friday post features none other than that "I'll take it there author," Adrienne Thompson. She brings the controversy and drama into your world in a realistic and emotional way.

Today, she's sharing a short snippet from her new release, See Me, Too. Read on...

Title: See Me, Too
Genre: African American/Multicultural Fiction
Book 2 of the See Me Series
Publication Date: 7/5/16

Blurb:

“Love is as destructive as it is generative, as perfidious as it is devoted, as unseemly as it is beautiful.” – Dr. David A. Moy

In this sequel to the controversially explosive novel, See Me, we revisit the Moy family and learn that the legacy of dysfunction left behind by the brilliant Dr. David Moy is more entrenching than one could ever imagine.

Olivia has moved on with Bennett Paul but finds that letting go of the past is not at all easy.

A newly married Jason Moy finds himself battling demons of his own.

Avery Moy is tangled in emotions he can't seem to control.

New characters are also introduced, and new secrets are revealed in See Me, Too.

Short Excerpt:

After all of the time that had passed, and all of the time she’d spent in Avery’s presence, it still unnerved her, at times, to be around him. His face, so similar to David’s, and his voice which matched David’s in pitch and tone, would send chills down her spine rather often. She had to remind herself over and over again that David was dead. Avery was not David.

He’s not David, she repeated in her mind as she eyed the clock. But despite that reassuring fact, she grew more and more nervous as the time of Avery’s expected arrival drew nearer. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. He’s not David. He’s not David.

When the doorbell rang, Olivia nearly screamed, startled by the sudden intrusion into the silence. She sighed, stood from the sofa, and smoothed the front of her long skirt. Running her fingers through her dreadlocks, she slowly walked to the door, grasped the door knob, and braced herself. “Who is it?” she called through the door.

“Avery.”

Her heart jumped.

Fab Friday Featuring K. R. Morrison...

Today's Fab Friday feature is an excerpt from author K. R. Morrison. She places a spin on the trinity by sharing how a particular set of people fell into the trap of the enemy. Read on to see her perspective of the most significant historical events, which shaped the world we live in today...

THE UNHOLY TRINITY EXCERPT:

The young man stood, his back to a pillar, and watched the people around him. They were in a constant state of hurrying, either to their occupations, or to the tax collectors so they could be squeezed dry of their hard-earned wages.

Judas snorted contemptuously.

Squeezed by those Roman bastards, and thanking the tax collectors for the privilege. Or so it seemed to him.

He crossed his arms and frowned as a widow was being harassed in the street by a couple of bored soldiers.

Probably looked at them too long. Obviously an insurgent. Well, lock her up with the rest of the rabble, Judas thought sarcastically. At least she’d have a roof over her head this night.

Judas turned away. He couldn’t afford to be noticed himself. Someone might recognize him, and remember his relationship with a certain Barabbas…

He gave a sharp, humorless bark of a laugh as he strolled leisurely through the marketplace.
Vendors shouted, shoving their wares at him, desperate to bring in a profit before the end of the day. Judas wanted to stop and look, but he had an appointment to keep. The money in the purse at his side was heavy; lightening the load by buying himself a trinket here or there would have been both a relief and a certain amount of revenge.

No. The money didn’t belong to him. It belonged to all of them—the men who followed the Rabbi, leaning on his every word, letting him lead them on, making them think he was going to change the world.

Had he so far? No! Judas’ hands clenched into fists when he thought of how he’d so wanted to believe this “Rabbi”. Three years had come and gone, and not so much as a suggestion of raising an army. Not even a rusty sword bought in defense of the people of Israel. When was he going to act?

He’d certainly had the people of Jerusalem all for him a few days ago, when he’d entered the gates on a donkey. Oh, he knew the Scriptures, and certainly had done the right thing to get noticed. Then, just when the people were getting to riot stage, he’d disappeared.

And the Roman soldiers came with their swords and menace, and everyone ducked their heads to the grindstone once again.

Well, Judas thought, his pace quickening, there is one other who will do what the Rabbi will not.

That was the man Judas was meeting.

ABOUT K.R. MORRISON

K.R. Morrison has lived in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years.  She moved there from California, after the Loma Prieta earthquake caused her to rethink her stance on “never moving again.”  At her first sight of Oregon, she never looked back.

She wrote her first book, “Be Not Afraid,” after a nightmare she experienced would not leave her mind, even when awake.  A second book, “UnHoly Trinity,” was launched this past January, and the third and fourth in the series are being worked on as of this writing.

She has also co-authored a book entitled “Purify My Heart” with Ruthie Madison, and edits for her publishing house, Linkville Press.  Book reviewing and editing for indie authors take up a lot of her time as well.

When not writing or working, she quilts or works in the garden.

She lives with her husband, her very artistic daughter, and a monster-sized cat. Her son makes an occasional visit from his temporary home in Brazil.
