The Door Is Open...

When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.- Helen Keller

Take time today to appreciate every blessing, every opportunity, and every closed and open door that comes your way. We all have our own plans in this life, but God has plans in store for us that will work out for our good. Proverbs 16 and 9 says, "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." And in Jeremiah 29 and verse 11 we are told "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Therefore, when things don't work out the way we hoped, trust that He will open another door. The door that has been closed was closed for your best interest, and something great is waiting on the other side of the open door. You just have to step out on faith and take a step inside.

Don't spend so much time looking back in your past going through the "woulda, coulda, shoulda's" because the only thing that results in is regrets and wasted time.

Release your past, and open your eyes to see what's in front of you. Walk through the open door, open your arms to embrace your future, and live out your purpose!

A Thug In The Dark...

In the midst of a four book series, which I have almost completed, I have been working on multiple projects. One of the projects that I have completed is A Woman's Afflictions. Three best friends have been together since their teens, but all three have made different choices on the direction their lives take.

Paige, a senior social worker for the state of Georgia, strives to make the difference in the lives of the traumatized children and teens that she works for. Many of the children are in foster care, or in orphanages. And while most people view her work as rewarding, Paige lives an alternative lifestyle, seeking to fill the void in her heart left by a tumultuous past.

This is an unedited version of A Woman's Afflictions. Read on and enjoy the excerpt from the chapter, A Run Away...

I sat at my desk staring at the file in front of me. As a senior social worker it was my job to connect children and families with resources needed to live a productive life. I was also called in to handle clients who had severe behavioral issues, and those who had severe traumatic incidents in their lives.

I was very familiar with the current child whose case file sat before me. She had been in nine foster homes in less than two years. Her mother had been murdered by her father and her mother’s family didn’t want to take her in. According to them, she had a multitude of issues they didn’t want to take on. Her father appeared to have no family. So, the child had been put into foster care. The first family couldn’t deal with her because she was constantly wetting the bed at the age of 13 and her reoccurring nightmares caused her to scream out loud in the middle of the night.

The second foster home had begun neglecting her after they had a child of their own. This wasn’t anything uncommon. Sometimes families who couldn’t have children wanted to adopt and started out as foster families first. But when they have children of their own, they decide they no longer want the foster child. They want to return them, as if they were products from a store that didn’t work, or unused or damaged goods.

The third foster family had been a nightmare. Allegations of sexual abuse arose from one of the other foster children in the home. An investigation into the allegations revealed not only was that child being abused, but so was the child in my case file. She had been raped repeatedly during her stay there by the teen foster brother, and it came out that the foster father had been molesting her, as well.

The fourth, fifth and sixth foster families were overwhelmed by the complications she brought. If she wasn’t fighting the other children, she was physically destroying the home. Her behavior grew worse from there as she bounced to her seventh, eighth, and ninth foster homes. She was now dealing with complications stemming from seeing her father murder her mother, and from being raped and molested. Her promiscuous behavior in the last three homes created complex matters for the foster parents. On a few occasions she attempted to approach the fathers in an inappropriate manner. Eventually she was kicked out of the last three.  She was currently residing in a temporary group home until we could determine her next step.

She was waiting in the lobby with her caseworker to meet with me. We were going to determine whether we needed to place her in a group home, or if we needed to implement other alternatives for her. I needed to address her promiscuity. She had been diagnosed with a couple of STDs on a few different occasions. And if we didn’t get matters under control now, I was afraid of what her future might look like.

I closed the file and took a sip of my coffee. I was ready to start my day. Walking into the lobby, I spotted Gail Hawthorne, the case worker and beckoned her and her client into my office. Trying to discuss her options and consequences of her behavior with her was to no avail. She was obstinate and didn’t want to talk to either of us. She sat sulking, staring out the window behind me the entire time.

After our meeting was finished, Gail and I sat in my office, while her client sat in an adjoining office under supervision.

“I recommend she goes to Angela Simms Home for Girls or the Mattie Simpson-Billings Home,” Gail advised.

“Why the Billings Home? It’s an orphanage for young children, not a group home.”

“I know but there is a couple that started off as volunteers, and now they’re on the board of directors. Courtney and Pierce Brennen have started a new mentoring program for orphaned children who have experienced traumatic events in their lives. It’s designed to help them with the healing process, reconnecting to society and discovering the gifts they have to offer. I believe it would be instrumental in helping Madison recover from her past,” Gail advised.

I thought it over for a moment. “Well, my concern is that she would be exposed to males, as well. With her promiscuous behavior I think it’s advisable to place her in an all girl’s program at the time. At least until we have had the opportunity to address these issues and put a plan in place to help her overcome.”

“I agree, but with round the clock supervision we can definitely prevent her from having any more episodes,” Gail countered.

I detested her terminology. What did she mean episode? She wasn’t a schizophrenic or a person with an illness like epilepsy. She didn’t have episodes, she had promiscuous behavior. The child had suffered abuse, and as a result she acted out her feelings of pain, hurt, anger, and love by the use of her body as a weapon. There were no episodes! I struggled to rid my intonation of disgust. A voice in my head reasoned that I possibly could have been taking this a little more personal than I should have.

“Gail, she cannot possibly have round the clock supervision. And that type of thinking is a fallacy. The system is understaffed and underpaid. No matter what they tell you in those homes, make no mistakes about it, they do not have the resources or time to dedicate to any one particular child. Don’t get me wrong,” I said holding my hand up to ward off her comment, “I’m sure they mean well. And I have heard nothing but great things about the orphanage. But what you’re suggesting to me is close to impossible. We cannot continue to let these children slip through the cracks. That orphanage isn’t the place for her at this time. If we fail her now, we will be just another kink in the system. She needs to know that she can trust someone. If she can’t trust her social worker, who can she trust?”

“I understand, Paige. I really do, I just thought—”

“Don’t think about it, Gail. It’s your job to know. You have to know what’s best for your client, and place her in the environment, which will foster growth, structure and healing for her.”

“So what do you recommend, Paige?”

“I recommend the Angela Simms Home for Girls. I have researched it, as well and that was my first and original thought. She will have daily counseling there, be placed on work detail, in a male free environment, and attend classes daily. They have mentors and therapists to pair them up with to help her on the road to recovery. We have to do everything possible to keep her out of the juvenile system. And right now the decisions she’s making is putting her on track there. When is her next doctor appointment?” I asked.

“In two weeks on the 17th,” Gail replied.

I consulted my calendar and thought about it for a moment. “You are escorting her there correct?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Okay, I will meet you all there. What time is it?” I realized I had that day opened so far. There were no appointments currently scheduled.

“Umm, 10:45 that morning,” she replied. Gail looked shocked. She knew I was in effect prepared to take this case out of her hands. She was already on probation for not handling a previous case properly. I was looking over her cases with a firm hand. And I had no plan on relenting any time soon. These girls couldn’t fall by the wayside. They needed someone to fight for them. I knew what it felt like to not have someone fight for you. Eventually you were no longer the victim, but you victimized those closest to you. The cycle had to end.

The rest of my day went that way and I couldn’t wait to get home. It was one abused or unloved child after another. Some with hope, and others with what some would say was no hope. But I believed in them and wouldn’t give up. The job of a social worker is never over and sometimes you get calls in the middle of the night. It took its toll on you emotionally and physically. Because I had dedicated myself to this line of work, I had no time for relationships, or family. I focused solely on the job and enjoying myself after hours. The job left me empty inside, too empty to give myself to others. My job could be rewarding when we saw positive outcomes, and at other times it could be draining. Or at least I wanted to believe it was the job doing that to me.

I was soaking in the tub when my cell phone rang. I grabbed a towel close at hand and wrapped it around myself. Walking to my bedroom I glanced at the caller ID. A smile slowly spread across my face. I needed him tonight. I hadn’t heard from him in about a week. But that was not abnormal, Rodney popped in and out of my life as it suited him. And I allowed it. He was just what I needed. He didn’t ask questions, never held me accountable, and he didn’t feel he had the need to explain himself to me. He wanted one thing and one thing only. He was my thug in the dark, and I loved him for it.

Hot Chocolate Always Lands You In Hot Water...

Hey, girlfriends! I'm back again and this week I've got some juicy gossip for you! Honey, I was minding my business and laughing at Belinda's tales about her antics. And guess who walks through those lovely glass doors...Black!

Angel's fine, sexy, gorgeous, black, hot, magnificent, sensual, exquisite, and did I say sexy? husband! Whew! But don't get me wrong...you wouldn't catch me fooling with him, he ain't my type. He's a straight up ho! But that don't stop that sexy, mutha-shut-yo-mouth from being so F-I-N-E! Mmm, mmm, mmm! The way those muscles bulge from that t-shirt! Whew! And then he wear them dark, Ray-Bans! You can't see nothing, but you know he looking at ya with those sexy, slanted brown eyes of his. Them eyes always look like they ready to tear something up. Somebody bring me a fan, because I'm having erotic Fan-Ta-Sies about him!

Anyway, he walks in and the first and only person he greets is Kianna! I seen the way they was eying each other, even if nobody else did. Then he didn't call her Kianna, he called her Ki-Ki, like they're on an intimate basis or something. To make matters worse? She calls him, Big Sexy!

Now here's the kicker, my station is right there behind Kianna's. So, when he walks by he calls himself whispering to her, but I heard that slick ass comment he made. She asked him what's going on, and he whispers, "You L’sexy, with that short skirt on. You betta watch yourself, girl."

What I wanna know is what she betta be watching? What he plan on doing to her that she needs to watch out for? Hmpph, both of 'em ain't nothing but a coupla hoes! I wouldn't trust either of 'em right in my face, let alone behind my back. But that's my perspective and Ty's perspective ain't neva flawed, girlfriend.

And either Angel aint' too bright, or she like playing the role of boo-boo the fool. In the midst of these two flirting, she actually gon' turn her back on 'em. But, this jackass gon' have the nerve to blow a kiss at Kianna, right there in the shop with everybody watching. Problem was nobody was watching, because they was too busy tryna act like Black don't exist. Can't nobody in that shop stand him, cuz of how he treats Angel. But, you bet your silky ass Vickie's ladies, that I was watching.

I seen how Kianna smiled at him when he did it and winked her eye, too. Now to top it off he gon' go over there and kiss Angel after all that. And what'd she do? Kiss his slimy ass back. I wouldn't kiss them lips with my fist. Ain't no telling where they been. Cuz dogs that lay down with other dogs sho' get up with fleas.

Anyhoo, they stepped out the salon to have a private talk. But then she came back in the salon fired up and tried to play it off. But, honey, I seen the way she slammed his car door and came barreling back into the shop, like someone lit her ass on fire. And Kianna didn't make it no better, smiling and smirking at her the way she was. Angel didn't pay her no mind though. I gotta give her that one, she went right back to her client and kept clocking them dollars.

Now, I've been called a shit-starter a time or two. But, the way I played it today, I must admit I feel a little guilty. Really, it wasn't my fault. Business had slowed down, and Belinda and Darla had gone to lunch. Mrs. O had the day off and we had a few clients on the hair side. Kianna turned the radio up and switched it from jazz to R&B, like she usually does when Mrs. O, or B.A.D. are gone.

Honey, our jam was on and the next thang you know, me and Kianna bumping and grinding and cranking out the lyrics of Keyshia Cole, Missy Elliott's, and Lil' Kim's, Let It Go. Angel was sitting watching us and chilling and then I opened up my mouth. Yes, I said it and I meant it and I hoped she caught a clue. I said, "These women be killing me getting mad because they man won’t stay at home. If they take good care of what they got, they wouldn’t be chasing us."
And then Kianna decides to prance around Angel singing that song. That was the kickoff of the stuff that happened later. And when I say drama got out of control, honey, I mean it.

That's what led to the scandal that almost cost Ms. O, her salon. But if you wanna know more, you gotta go support my girl Chelle and get book 1 in The House of BeJeweled series, BeJeweled: The Flight of an Angel.

Anyhoo, I gots to go clock some dollars of my own. These divas lining up at my chair, waiting for Ty's magic fingers to work a miracle. And if you need your do did, too, you know where to find this diva! My card's below. And beware of Black. Honey he's fine, but that one's dangerous. Because hot chocolate always lands you in hot water. And sometimes the sweet taste just ain't worth the burn.

TaTa for Now!

Stay In The Light...

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light. -Aristotle Onassis

This past week I found myself stressing about situations I didn't have an answer for. I kept telling myself that I wasn't stressed out. But when I went to sleep on Thursday night I had a headache and was nauseous, because I was subconsciously stressed out. On Friday, rather than stressing I decided to turn my worries into praise. I reflected on all the blessings God has brought into my life.

The more I praised Him, and focused on the blessings the better I felt. I prayed and gave the situations over to God. I let Him know that I had no clue how my immediate concerns would be resolved, but He knew what I needed and I trusted Him to provide.

On Saturday, I was no longer focused on my problems or even the resolution. Out of the blue, I received a very unexpected resolution to my situation. I could only thank Him for the rest of the day, and laugh in gratitude about His faithfulness.

I have learned through the years that He doesn't always answer our prayers in the way we expect. Sometimes, the answers and blessings come in the most unexpected ways. We simply have to set our mind on pushing out the dark, negative thoughts, and focus on the light.

It is true that we attract what we focus on. When our thoughts are dark and negative that is what comes our way. When our thoughts are filled with light, and focused on the positive, we attract positive.

Choose today to fill your mind with positive thoughts and be that light in a darkened room. You never know who else you may touch or encourage throughout the week.

Be Blessed!

Friday Gigglefest...

It's Friday and time for a little laughter in your day. I found these cute little jokes online at Friday-Fun.com.

#1:
A kindergarten pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat, but it was dead.
"How do you know that the cat was dead?" she asked her pupil.
"Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move," answered the child innocently.
"You did WHAT?!?" the teacher exclaimed in surprise.
"You know," explained the boy, "I leaned over and went 'Pssst!' and it didn't move."

#2:
A small boy is sent to bed by his father Five minutes later...."Da-ad..."
"What?"
"I'm thirsty. Can you bring drink of water?"
"No, you had your chance. Lights out."
Five minutes later: "Da-aaaad...."
"WHAT?"
"I'm THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water??"
"I told you NO! If you ask again, I'll have to spank you!!"
Five minutes later......"Daaaa-aaaad....."
"WHAT!"
"When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of water?"

#3:
A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, "I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter." Her mother told her this was wrong, she must say, "I'm Jane Sugarbrown." The Vicar spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, "Aren't you Mr Sugarbrown's daughter?" She replied, "I thought I was, but mother says I'm not."

#4:
It was that time, during the Sunday morning service, for the children's sermon. All the children were invited to come forward. One little girl was wearing a particularly pretty dress and, as she sat down the pastor leaned over and said, "That is a very pretty dress. Is it your Easter Dress?" The little girl replied, directly into the pastor's clip-on microphone, "Yes and my Mom says it's a bitch to iron."

Hope your Friday is off to a Fabulous start. Don't forget to follow me by clicking the "Follow This Blog," or "Subscribe In A Reader," links. You can also follow by entering your email address in the box that reads, "Enter Your Email Address." These links are located in the right panel.

Open The Door & Embrace God's Glory...

Today is a wonderful Throwback Thursday. I am re-blogging a post from my old blog, Writing My Dreams. This piece was originally posted on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
I love looking back over old posts and seeing where I was in my life, in my spiritual journey, and in my writing processes. I am always encouraged when I see growth and when I can assess what I have accomplished based on past expectations. Do you often self-reflect?

This post was a reflection of who I was as a person, and nicely coincides with the post that I wrote this Monday, entitled Inspired to Live. Enjoy!

THIS IS WHO I AM...

Today I received my daily scripture sent to me by a friend who receives them from Joel and Victoria Osteen. The message was based around the following thought process:

“I wish I had been true to who I was and not just lived to meet the expectations of others.”

This sentence alone made me start thinking about who I am. My husband challenges me to do this quite often, yet I don't. I understand it is vital to my growth as a person, therefore, when I do reflect on who I am I hope to improve myself as a result.

As children we look to please others, whether they are our parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, educators, and friends. However, as we become older we become more individualized and begin to define who we are. Our actions, behaviors, and decisions reflect how we feel and who we see ourselves as. This is because we tend to shed that worry about what others think about us and begin to live life based on how we feel or what we think. However, I seemed to have grasped this concept at some later stage in life at the cost of much and to the detriment of relationships with those around me. It is important to look within ourselves to understand who we are and what makes us tick. Some of this may open other doors that we dare not enter...doors that lead to painful memories and hurt.

We quickly back out of that room and close that door because we don't want to deal with those feelings. But it is the only way to grow.

As I look within I know that I am a spiritual person whether I am at church or in quiet moments alone worshiping in His presence. I am emotional and I feel things on a deeper level than some.

The little girl within that many of us never lose, still holds on to some of the insecurities and self-consciousness she brought with us from childhood. And as a result this has led me to make some mistakes that I must learn from.

I am silly and goofy at times and although years have gone by and mistakes have been made I realize it is okay to laugh at myself and my mistakes sometimes. Rather than remain self-conscious I have learned to laugh with those laughing at me and point to my own flaws...thanks to that wonderful husband of mine.

In a crowd of people I am extremely shy just as a little kid looking for the familiar face. Yet, one on one, I have so much to say and won't quit talking.

I stand firm on what I believe in and won't back down...resulting in my aversion to losing an argument. This compassionate, food-loving, temperamental, girl/woman is who I am. And I love being me. No matter what my flaws or quirks I have to be the best me that I can be...only then can I be the best for those around me. I encourage you to look within. If you love what you see...embrace it and keep on doing you. And if you don't like what you see, keep on working on it and just know that you are God's WIP! (work in progress), and He will never be finished with you until He calls you home.

So in my husband's words whether "good or bad, right or wrong...we are who we are" and we need to own it and move forward in it to embrace all God has given us...living our lives to His glory.

A Dry Place...

I have gotten a lot of positive feedback on The House of BeJeweled series. And with book 2 recently released, many readers are ready for book 3. Book 2, BeJeweled: What A Tangled Web We Weave definitely leaves readers wondering what happens in book 3, because of the great cliffhanger at the end.

Book 3 goes more in depth with dealing with Nikki and Carlos' issues, as well as Wesley and his romantic life. Mrs. "O," Olivia, uncovers a secret buried so deep in the grave with her mother that it challenges her faith and ability to forgive. Where she has always been a rock for others, she's looking for someone who can give her the support she needs.

Today, I'll share an excerpt from book 3, BeJeweled: Remix. This excerpt comes from the chapter: A Dry Place. Sometimes, we find ourselves in that place in life, where we feel hopeless, powerless, and discouraged. We have to find inspiration and hope by taking it back to the presence of the Lord, and His people.

A DRY PLACE:

Olivia lowered her frame down and looked around the room. There were framed pictures of the Hightower family all around, as well as members of the church family. One wall showcased Elder Hightower’s degrees, including her Masters of Divinity and other certifications. A glass table sat under the window, overlooking a small circular garden with a waterfall. On the table was Elder Hightower’s mother’s bible and pictures of Elder Hightower’s mother, Thelma, and Olivia’s mother, Jewel. They had both been close and passed within a year of one another.

“Yes, every now and then, Pastor needs a rest from the pulpit. He wants me to preach more often, but I get so nervous up there,” Elder Hightower shared.

“Really? We can’t tell from down there. We would love to hear you minister more often. Not that there’s anything wrong with Pastor’s preaching,” Olivia added with a laugh.

“Honey, I know. He just often gets long-winded and it seems we’ll never get out of here,” Elder Hightower joked. “But, I try to be obedient and minister when he asks me, too. He knows that I get nervous that’s why he’s having me do more of these studies, to get me comfortable. Whenever he lightly suggests, I simply nod and smile. But when he tells me that’s what he wants, then I honor his word.”

“Hmm, I admire that. I really do,” Olivia replied, shedding a little light into her own ordeal.

“How’s everyone at the shop, Ivy?” Elder Hightower asked, pulling a pen and notepad from her drawer.

“Everyone’s great. It’s still full of drama and gossip as usual,” Olivia chuckled.

“It wouldn’t be the beauty shop without it,” Elder Hightower agreed. “What about the second salon. Is that going well for you?” she asked.

“It is. It’s a lot of hard work, but I don’t regret a moment of it. Most times, anyway,” Olivia confided.

“Mm-hmm. Do you mind if we pray first?” Elder Hightower asked.

“Of course, not,” Olivia smiled, reaching her hands out to grasp hold of Elder Hightower’s extended hands.

They bowed their heads for a moment of prayer, and Olivia instantly felt better afterwards.

“What’s going on with you, darling?” Elder Hightower asked, sitting back in her chair.

“I honestly thought that because Ray and I had known each other so long, it would make our marriage relatively easy. Not to mention we’re both mature adults now, we’re settled in our careers, and we know ourselves. But it seems as if every time that I turn around we’re arguing about something. For instance, he was one of my greatest supporters in pursuing this shop. Now it seems as if all he does is complain that I’m not home,” Olivia explained. “I need to spend a lot of time at the shop to get it off the ground in the beginning. And I can’t ignore the second shop,” Olivia complained with a look of frustration. “And if quality time is so valuable, then why doesn’t he stay in town sometimes? He has been gone out of town almost every weekend this year, to visit his kids,” she continued.

“It’s important that spouses spend quality time together, especially in the early years of marriage. And honey, it’s not going to be an easy road. However, that will always need to be an important part that you both nurture throughout the rest of your marriage. You and Raymond need to sit down and pencil a date night together weekly, and stick to it. Nothing should be more important than that or allowed to sidetrack that. And you both need to be respectful of each other’s time when making this date,” Elder Hightower pointed out.

“We’ve tried to do that once before and it doesn’t work. Our schedules just won’t mesh,” Olivia retorted.

“Would you be willing to change your schedule to mesh with his, Ivy? God has blessed you with your own business for this purpose. And I understand that you need to spend more time there because of the new salon, but there are sacrifices your marriage needs from you as well,” Elder Hightower explained.

“I mean, I guess I can change my schedule around to meet his. I just thought it was supposed to be give and take. I’ve always heard a marriage should be fifty-fifty,” Olivia responded.

“Ivy, you know that you are to submit to your husband in everything. For a long time you have been a strong, independent woman. And it’s hard for you to be anything but strong or independent, because you learned from the best. Jewel was the epitome of strength and independence, and you have followed in her footsteps. But it’s okay to let that go now, darling. It’s not only okay, but it’s necessary. You can still be strong, but you are part of the most important union in life now. Genesis two and twenty-four says ‘that is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.’ You have to become one with your husband and not continue to live independently of him,” Elder Hightower expressed. “You will only get out of this marriage what you put into it.”

“You’re right, it is hard to let go of the independence,” Olivia admitted.

“Why? What are you afraid of?” Elder Hightower inquired.

Olivia sat staring out the window for a moment, rubbing her hands together. She saw a little red bird flitting back and forth. It reminded her of the freedom she once enjoyed as a single woman. But then she also recalled how lonely she had been.

“To be honest, I guess I’m afraid of failing,” Olivia shared, turning back to look at Elder Hightower.

“Of what? Your marriage?”

“No. My mom,” Olivia declared.

A Meeting of The House...

8/18/2015

You know what time it is. That's right it's a Tête-à-Tête Tuesday! And welcome back because I, Tyrone, am taking ovah, honey! Most of you have read about the team at BeJeweled I and II. But today, I'm giving you a glimpse of each of team member, and just a little background story...my take anyway, because that's all that matters. We'll chit chat about those other folks that wreck the lives of the team another time.

But today it's about our fabulous and not-so-fabulous team members.

Picture
Ms. Olivia, more affectionately known as, Ms. O. is the queen of the house. She's the owner of The House of BeJeweled. And she's the most beautiful soul I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. You mess with Ms. O, and this fierce diva (moi) won't be pulling out a can of whip ass. No, I'm gonna leave somebody stankin!

Anyhoo, Ms. O is a sweetheart and she's got vision. But despite all the angels that follow her and keep her lifted up, you know that devil just hanging around waiting for her to dash her foot against a stone. Aaaha! You thought I didn't know nothing 'bout the Bible. I done told y'all, don't be so quick to judge people.

But yes, Ms. O, is the glue that keeps all of us together. She works to inspire us to fulfill our dreams and get the healing we need. Honey, Ms. O needs a little healing of her own.
Picture
Angel is the epitome of inner beauty and outer beauty. She has a spirit much like Ms. Olivia's but she's still got a lot of growing to do. She's got love for people like Olivia, but she hasn't figured out how to love herself yet. So, that makes her an easy doormat for people to walk on.

But you know what they say about those easygoing people...you just don't know what's gonna happen to make her snap. And when she does...let's just say I don't wanna be around. Them quiet types, crazy as hell.
Picture
Kianna! She's the only one at BeJeweled downtown who can come close to the styling diva that I am. She has a fierce sense of fashion and she's wicked with those styling hands. But, she's no joke when it comes to men. Honey, she goes through 'em like a grieving widow goes through tissues. And if you want yours, I suggest you don't let her come around him.

That heffa is never above scandal either! You hear me? When it comes to drama she's the ruling queen and nobody better touch that crown. But, with enemies like her, who needs the devil! Hell, he's scared of Kianna.
Picture
Wesley! Whew Lawd! That is one fine, cool, sexy piece of chocolate! And he knows it, too. Yeah, he tries to play this humble role, but he always gets my blood rushing. Nikki and Rory can't figure out what to do with him, but I can think of a thing or two.

Wes is our resident masseuse who's also enrolled in school full-time in a physical therapy program. Ms. O got him running between downtown and Buckhead. But he can run me any day! He's definitely going to heat up the pages with what he brings to the table. In more ways than one, if you know what I mean.

Picture
Nikki, is a hot little Puerto-Rican/African-American number. She's definitely got a temper on her, that one. Too bad she can't do nothing that with that crazy husband of hers. Mmm-hmm, rumor is he can't keep his hands to himself. But you ain't heard it from me. Look at her neck when she wears her hair up. That's all I'm saying.

Anyway, she's a nail tech at BeJeweled downtown. And there's trouble brewing all around her and that means problems for a few people at the salon. Her secret's so explosive it threatens to blow the roof off the salon. Caliente! That's what she claims about herself, but honey, you ain't seen caliente! Wait until you read books 2 and 3, BeJeweled: What A Tangled Web We Weave and BeJeweled: Remix, coming soon.

Picture
Rory is another nail tech at BeJeweled downtown, and she's nothing to play with either. Ms. Fierce brings that New York attitude in abundance with a bit of conceit and bossiness on top. She keeps the chicks on the nail side in check. But, her friendship with Nikki is in jeopardy. I don't know how they're gonna work through their drama.

Picture
Meet our Dynamic Duo, Belinda and Darla, also known as B.A.D. They're the ladies everyone love to hate at BeJeweled downtown. But, I don't know why, they just do what everybody else in the salons do...gossip.

They are always in the know and when they aren't...they just make it up. I love 'em. These heffas is hilarious! And honey they can party, too. I ought to know...I've taken 'em out a time or two with me and they party with some of the best queens. But they have to grow on some people. But their hair techniques are on point and Darla is a weave queen if you need to add a few inches.
Picture
Skai is our beautiful little Sweden nail tech at BeJeweled II in Buckhead. She's only hanging around until she gets her degree in art. Honey, I'd love to take her on the town and open her up to life a bit. She's a hot little number, but a little reserved and skittish if you ask me. I think the truth of the matter is, if she gets a little drink in her, she might show us a thing, or two.

Picture
This chocolate beauty is Georgette. She works at the Buckhead location, as a nail tech working to become a stylist. She's becoming buddy-buddy with Angel, but I'm not so sure I trust her. There's a lot I don't know about her yet, and she's not too keen on people being in her business. I don't know...something's not right. But we'll see.
Picture
Brenda is a stylist and the resident "mother" of BeJeweled Buckhead. She's always protecting the staff in Ms. O's absence. Don't cross her children (the entire Buckhead team), and you won't draw back a nub. She don't ruffle my feathers, and I don't ruffle hers. That's all to be said about her.
Picture
Antoinette "Toni" has that B.A.D. bug. She loves to gossip, but unlike our Dynamic Duo, she doesn't make up stuff to keep herself entertained. She's another stylist at BeJeweled Buckhead. She's fierce with the hair and the makeup and her clients love her.

But as beautiful as girlfriend is, for some reason she has trouble finding a man. The stories she has to tell about the men that want her are the stories nightmares are made of. Will she ever find love? Or will she be forever single? I'm still trying to get to know this chick a little better. I hope she's not another Kianna. Lord knows there isn't enough room for two of them at BeJeweled.

Picture
Picture
And here I am! Mr. Fabulosity! Your Diva! Tyrone. Baby, I'm bringing magic into the salon every day! With my wit, my fashion sense, these fabulous styling hands, and my fine body! They're not ready for me.

Alright ladies, I have to make that money. I'll be bringing more dirt on the Divas and Duds of BeJeweled. So hang in there until next week. But in the meantime, you know what it is. Do the things you used to talk about doing but never did. Know when to let go and when to hold on tight. Stop rushing. Don't be intimidated to say it like it is. Stop apologizing all the time. Learn to say no, so your yes has some oomph. Spend time with the friends who lift you up, and cut loose the ones who bring you down. Stop giving your power away. Be more concerned with being interested than being interesting. Be old enough to appreciate your freedom, and young enough to enjoy it. Finally, know who you are - Kristin Armstrong

I have made so many mistakes in this life. And throughout them all, they have matured me, grown me, molded me, and taught me to embrace the learning of those mistakes. Yet, I have also learned to embrace every word spoken in the quote above.

I'm still learning to do the things I talked about but never did. I understand what it means to let go when it's time and hold on tight when I need to. The letting go of things in life was not an easy lesson to learn. Yet, in learning to do that, I have learned what it means to be at peace. I cannot control other people's actions or decisions, and I no longer desire to. If their decision is not in their best interest, all I can do is pray over it, and give it to God. It doesn't matter if I can see the path it will lead them down. I simply trust Him.

I'm easing into the not rushing part of life. I'm learning to really enjoy the moment of whatever time I am in. And in that enjoyment, I have learned to appreciate life. Fast forwarding to easier times and better moments, only causes me to miss out on learning opportunities, and the chance to live.

Speaking my mind, not apologizing, and standing on purpose was a hard lesson learned. But definitely one well earned. I am who I am and I make no apologies for that. Yet, I am coming to a place of understanding what has molded and shaped me into this woman, why I feel what I feel, and believe what I believe. We all have to make decisions in life and stand firm on them no matter the outcome. You may not agree with my opinions or my decisions, but they are mine to make and mine to live. Just as you must make and live yours.

Learning to not give my power away has been the most freeing experience. It has enabled me to be strong, be courageous, and give my best to whatever situation I am in. No longer do I give people the power to control me by giving in to frustration, rage, depression, sorrow, fear, or the need to please everyone. No longer do I give people power over me by allowing them to dictate how I should live my life. I define who I am and live life based on the purpose God designed for me. And everyone's purpose is uniquely beautiful and inspirational.

Being interested in living life, appreciating and enjoying my freedom is inspirational in itself. All these experiences combined have helped me to know who I am, and whose I am.

Be beautiful and inspirational just being you.

I was super excited that my books arrived on last Wednesday! There was so much going on with my husband returning to town, and the kids starting school last week, I was on an emotional roller coaster ride. In some ways, it felt like Christmas in my household. Well, today, I'm sharing a bit of BeJeweled: What A Tangled Web We Weave with you.

EXCERPT: Decisions, Decisions

Nikki walked into her dark apartment that evening and placed her bags on the floor by the door. She walked to the bedroom and sat her purse on the dresser alongside her keys. She looked at the bed, where Carlos had passed out from drinking. Against everyone’s advice, she had returned home again.

The day that Wesley took her back to her mother’s house when she had crashed his and Yvette’s date night, she had stayed with her mother a couple more nights. Her sister had spent some time with her and her mother. But no amount of prying the two of them did could get her to discuss the problems she had with Carlos. Her sister was excited about the baby on the way. Her mother was a bit more apprehensive. She had shared that as happy as she was to have a grandchild, she wondered if Nikki’s timing was right.

People often thought they had the best advice. However, Nikki had learned that no one could really tell you how to live your life, or what was in your best interest. If they hadn’t walked that walk, how could they judge or advise you on what to do? Sure, it was easy for Ms. Olivia, Wesley, her mom, and sister, Yamile, to tell her to leave her husband and not go back. But she had made vows of for better or worse, and Carlos was right. She couldn’t keep running out every time the going got tough. Nope, she was determined this time she would stick with her husband and get him the help he needed.

Looking down and rubbing her belly, she thought about the life growing inside of her. She didn’t know if it was Carlos’ or Wes’ baby, but what if God was sending this baby as a warning for her to get her life together? Maybe he was giving her and Carlos a second chance. She had prayed and asked for this baby. And it seemed as just when she began believing maybe God did exist after all, He had blessed her with this little miracle. She was going to purge all thoughts of Wes from her system. After all, he was just part of a fantasy world. What did she really know about him? He had obviously purged her from his system. He had gotten with Yvette either during, or just after, the time he had been with her.

Nikki had been having strong feelings for Wesley for a while. But what was he really made of? And what would happen between them if things got tough? Maybe my feelings for him are just stemming off what me and Carlos have been going through, she thought not for the first time. What happens when the new wears off? Will I be bored of him, or will he get tired of me? No, I better stay home; at least I know what to expect here, she thought as she slipped out of her pullover sweater.

Getting undressed down to nothing but her panties, Nikki walked over to the bed and joined her husband. Lying next to him, she ran her hands through his soft, curly brown hair and then kissed him on his eyelashes. He stirred slightly in his sleep and mumbled something indecipherable. The smell of the liquor on his breath sent a wave of nausea through Nikki that she couldn’t hold back. Jumping from the bed, she barely made it to the toilet before her dinner spewed forth.

Grasping the hard toilet bowl between her hands, she sunk down onto the floor with tears stinging the back of her eyes and bile burning her throat. The cold, tile floor soothed her hot body as chills ran through her. Thinking about her life now and the little one growing inside of her, once again, Nikki knew that coming back home was the best decision after all.

She forced herself up off the floor and brushed her teeth. Walking back into the bedroom, she determined in her mind that she would give it the best try she had ever given it. Pulling the covers back, she climbed into bed and nestled close to her husband, who didn’t realize his wife had returned home.

Hello! Hello! Hello! Thank you, it's a Terrific Tête-à-Tête Tuesday with Tyrone! I know you've been waiting all week to get to me, since last Tuesday. Honey, I had an appointment scheduled today to get my do done!

After working on all those divas walking up into The House of BeJeweled, sometimes, I have to pamper and love on me, too. But as usual Chelle's nagging me, talking about I can't disappoint the people. Hmmpph! Well, here I am, but it will be short and sweet because I pushed my appointment back, but today I have to get beautified!

What are we talking about today? Oh yeah, the spring fling! Every year Ms. O puts on a spring fling for her staff. Just a little party to show her appreciation for our hard work. So this time, we're all there having a royal ball, and of course there's got to be a tidbit of drama. It wouldn't be Chelle, if she didn't throw some in.

Honey, did you see how Kianna was all over Black? She was on him so hard, she fit him like a wetsuit! And he wasn't hardly trying to peel her back either. Where was Angel? She had taken her naïve little self to the little girl's room and left her man to the sharks, honey! Mm, mm, mm! Like I told you I always watch everything!

I about died laughing when I saw Ms. O get up from her table and make it to Kianna and Black. Talking about a dynamite! She looked like she was about to explode on them, hightailing it over there to break them up before Angel came out. She was working it, too, in them six inch stilettos.

I seen Kianna and Black about to creep out to the gardens and ain't no telling what would've happened, if Ms. O hadn't disturbed their rendezvous. You think we was having a spring fling, girlfriend, I'm sure they would've put the spring into fling! I would've loved to see what happened that night. But of course, Ms. O's always the epitome of class. So, she sends that fast-tailed heffa, Kianna to do something with the waiters, like she was nothing but the help. Chile, you shoulda seen girlfriend's face. She was too hot for coffee! But that wasn't the interesting part...what was funny, was Black still standing their eying Kianna like he wanted to take her right there on the floor where they stood! Honey, he ain't caring about Ms. O standing there, or nobody else in that room. When I told you he'll screw anything in a skirt, I wasn't lying. Cuz, we all know how Kianna gets down.

Anyway, your girl comes back from the bathroom, and she don't notice nothing. Po' lil' boo-boo the fool, believes whatever people dish out to her. And of course, Ms. O, peace maker that she is won't say a word. The signs about his lascivious behavior are always right in Angel's face, calling her name. But she keeps turning her head the other way. Sometimes, you just can't help stupid. Honey, what that Forrest Gump say again? Stupid is as stupid does? And she's got to be some kinda stupid, to keep putting up with his foolishness! Woooohhoooo! Chile I cracks myself up sometimes.

Anyways, I gots to get out of here. Baby doll has got to go pamper herself. I loves y'all, and I'll see you next week. Oh if you need your do did, you know my number. If not, I left my calling card below. Be good!

Tata for now!

Your Gifts Have A Greater Purpose...

Picture
“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything you gave me.” – Erma Bombeck

Do you know what your talents are? Are you aware of your innate gifts? I have heard that your talents or God given gifts are those things, which you do easier than others. When I look at members of my family, it's easy for me to break that down. My gift is writing, and I am becoming aware of a certain spiritual gift, as well. My husband and my youngest son are phenomenal in numbers. My daughter is gifted in athletics, and my oldest son is gifted in drawing. We each have many more gifts that we have been endowed with, but those are our focal gifts that we nurture.

Outside of our natural gifts we are each blessed with spiritual gifts, which we are to use to bring Him glory and enhance the lives of others. Whether it be knowledge, wisdom, teaching, helping, or leadership, we are to do it to His glory. We are to pour out everything that we have in making this world a better place. We can improve one person's life daily, just based on our attitudes, or what we do for them. You never know whose life you will impact or how. Simply be the best you can be, and use your gifts to build those around you.

It is essential that we exercise my our gifts, so that they do not go to waste. Our gifts are not given to us to be used for selfish purposes, but they are to be used for a greater goal...serving others.

In the women's fiction books I write, I capture important trials and tribulations that average people experience. However, I always try to lead the way back to God, to growing beyond life's challenges, and learning to believe in yourself. Because in the end you can accomplish great works, if you simply believe in yourself, and a Higher Power.

I believe in all that we do it should be done as a service to Him and to His people.

Back on Murder...Re-Blog!

Picture
It's a #throwbackthursday and I am re-posting a blog post from August 6, 2013. It's from my old blog, Writing My Dreams. Other than being an author of course, I am an avid book lover. I often posted book reviews on my blog back then. So here's a re-post of a book review for "Back On Murder." Because of course, I love mysteries.

AMAZON OVERVIEW:
BACK ON MURDER Series: A Roland March Mystery

Det. Roland March is a homicide cop on his way out. But when he's the only one at a crime scene to find evidence of a missing female victim, he's given one last chance to prove himself. Before he can crack the case, he's transferred to a new one that has grabbed the spotlight--the disappearance of a famous Houston evangelist's teen daughter.

With the help of a youth pastor with a guilty conscience who navigates the world of church and faith, March is determined to find the missing girls while proving he's still one of Houston's best detectives.

Another murder mystery on the shelf! I love the mysteries, because they keep my mind engaged, keep me guessing, and the adrenaline flowing, as I attempt to solve them. In this novel, we encounter Detective Roland March, who is a washed out homicide detective, barely hanging on because of a tragic incident in his past. When he identifies evidence at the scene of a crime that spotlights a potential missing female victim, he is once again at the center of a homicide case. As he finds himself getting closer to the truth, he is suddenly transferred to missing persons, and is tasked with finding the missing teen daughter of a missing Houston evangelist.

Roland believes the two cases are somehow connected; however, he is having difficulty convincing the powers that be and his fellow officers of the connection. As things spiral out of control, March suddenly switches the focus of his investigation to the least likely suspects. His identification of these potential suspects endangers his life, his career, and possibly his family. He is finally given the support that he needs to make his connection, but with a limited amount of time. As the clock is running out, he must connect the dots and complete the puzzle before another murder needs to be solved...his own.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a constant cat-and-mouse game throughout the novel and kept challenging my problem-solving skills. The suspense was heightened throughout the book, and there were many times when I thought I had solved the mystery, just to find I was wrong. Mr. Bertrand's book was suspenseful, captivating, and entertaining.

The book was an easy read, smooth transitions, and wonderful editing. I would rate this book a 4- The Real Thang!

The Set-up...

What was Tyrone ranting and raving about yesterday? Read on and you'll see exactly what happened...

Angel picked up her phone to call her husband, Black to see if he was picking up their son after work. Not getting a response she left him a voice mail and turned back to Tyrone and his client.

“You know what? I really need to hook you up with Alex. I’m telling you y’all two would make a great couple,” he stated as he continued trimming Ame’s hair.

Angel’s eyebrow lifted as Tyrone made that remark because he was staring directly at her. “Who you talking to Ty, me or her?” she asked, placing her hand over her chest and then pointing at his client.

Ame’s head popped up as Tyrone’s magical fingers traded in the massage for a pair of scissors.

“You. Who else?” he asked, looking at Angel with a mysterious smile.

“Come on, Ty. Don’t start that stuff,” she shook her head and turned back to her station pretending to clean it up, hoping he would let the matter drop.

“Why not? He’s fabulous, good-looking, intelligent, and witty. He’s hot, too, if you’re into Armenian guys,” Tyrone explained.

“Come on, Ty, you know I’m married.”

“Mhmm, I know. That’s why you need a man like Alex,” Tyrone stated with twisted lips.

Angel was aware that the rest of the stylists and the clients were listening in on their conversation. Realizing Tyrone wouldn’t let the matter drop so easily, she decided to turn the tables on him.

“If he’s so fabulous, good-looking, intelligent, and witty why don’t you go out with him?”

Tyrone made soft smacking noises with his lips, and began snipping away at Ame’s thick, dark-brown tresses with his scissors, getting rid of her split ends. “Angel, he ain’t my type, that’s all. We’ve been friends for far too long and he’s more like a brother anyway. Hold still, girl, before you be bald up in here.” Tyrone repositioned Ame’s head at the angle he needed to continue making precision cuts.

“N’all it’s more like you ain’t his type,” Belinda, a hairstylist, at the station next to him teased, looking up from the barrel curls she was doing on her client’s hair.

Don't Judge Me...

She almost tried my life! I meant well, but females always have to take it to the next level.

What am I talking about? That damned Angel! I see everything that goes on in that shop. Ty is no fool by any means, girlfriend. Some females make up any lie to make their stuff look good. And most people fall for it. But this diva? You can tell the peoples what you want, baby, but I'm not buying that brand.

Angel's in love with Black. Now I'm not hating on marriage, I love it, too. But, if it ain't working for you, it...ain't...working. And it ain't working for that child. Angel's husband, Black, mess with everything in a skirt, and chile I do mean everything!

On the other hand, Angel is the epitome of her name. She's a good girl, and a bit naïve if you ask me. And I know you didn't, but I'm telling you anyway.

I get tired of seeing her crying and blowing his phone up when she thinks no one is looking. He treats her like the bottom of a child's shoe. So, I'm feeling a bit sorry for the girl. I decided to try and hook her up with my friend Alex. He's intelligent, fabulous and good-looking. And I'm telling her this right? I'm trying to do her a favor. Maybe, everybody'll quit talking about her business. But, guess what this heifer gone have the nerve to say to me?

She asks me if he's all that, why won't I get with him? Bye Felicia!

Does the fact that I'm gay mean that I have to be with any man that comes my way? Hell no! I'm not like her husband, I don't hoe-hop around. Alex is like a brother to me. It ticks me off when people think that just because I'm gay it's gone rub off on them, or that I want their man, or in this case that I'll get with any man!

I might have my issues, but your sin ain't no different from my sin. We all sinning and He don't differentiate. Only man does! So, get off your little Hallelujah choir high horse and stop trying to judge me, because it ain't working. I recall my Mama telling me we all sin and fall short of His glory. That's what she said the Bible said anyway. It might've said something like that. And I might be falling short, but, girlfriend so are you! Don't look down your nose at me, lil' thirsty heifer!

That's all I got to say 'bout the matter today. So, for now...toodle-loo! Your diva has to make that money. In the meantime, don't judge me. Get yo' life, girlfriend!

TaTa!

The End Of Your Comfort Zone...

8/3/2015

Picture
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Neale Donald Walsch

Ahhh, that wonderful word…comfort zone. We love it, we embrace it, we rejoice in it, we’re defined by it and we’re restricted by it.

Quite often we find ourselves in a place that makes us feel good; a place that we don’t believe we need to push beyond the boundaries. We don’t want to test the waters, or go to the edge to see what’s on the other side. But, this limited thinking traps us in the confines of our finite minds, prohibiting us from exceling and reaching for the stars.

As our children return back to school today, I reflect on my Pastor’s words yesterday, regarding exceling. He spoke about exceling in our worship, praise and offering. On last night, my husband and I spoke with our children about exceling in their attitudes, behaviors and decisions. Embracing an attitude of excellence will allow them to soar beyond their dreams. This school year doesn’t have to be riddled with doubt, fears, insecurities, or insignificance. Instead, they can have what they say they can have, they can achieve what they believe they can achieve, they can embrace every dream they ever dreamt.

This holds true for us as adults, as well. We can only begin to pursue our dreams, live a beautiful life, inspire others, and excel beyond the moon and the stars when we step out of our comfort zone. Only when we push towards the end of that comfort zone can we truly begin living, breathing, ascending, soaring, and exceling.

What’s on your mind and heart today? What’s preventing you from pushing beyond your comfort zone? Remove that spirit of fear, and embrace new depths and heights. Live the beautiful life you were designed to live.
