The Woman Behind the Salon...

Today is a #tbt and I'm sharing a post from my old blog, Writing My Dreams. I sit down in a one-on-one with Olivia Morrison to discuss her views on her team, her salon, and the drama of books 1 and 2. Sit back and read on...

Today's Take A Peek Tuesday post will take you into the background story of The House of BeJeweled. I'm interviewing Olivia, owner and operator of The House of BeJeweled. There were a few things that were left lingering in book one that I want to address today. We'll see if she gives us the answers we're searching for.

****************************************************************************
ME: Hi Olivia! Welcome back to Writing My Dreams.

OLIVIA: Thanks for having me, Chelle. I'm excited to see what you have in store for me today (she laughs nervously).

ME: I'm just as excited to have you on the proverbial hot seat, so to speak. Okay, we know that in book 1 your long time friend Raymond moved back to town. Apparently, what he didn't know was that you had been in love with him for years, despite the fact that he was married and you had been involved in relationships of your own. How did he react when you told him how you felt about him?

OLIVIA: Well, for those who've read book 1 you know that Ray shared his feelings for me, as well. Apparently, my feelings for him weren't a shock like I thought they would be. He'd known about them for a long time. I just didn't realize he knew. But, I didn't expect those feelings to be reciprocated. And once he told me about the drama with Bethany and the kids, I was floored. Yet, it opened up the opportunity for us to pursue a relationship.

ME: And pursue you did! Actually, it was the pursuit of those feelings that started your own personal drama between you and Raymond. He seemed to be supportive of your "vow" that you took in the beginning, but as the relationship progresses we realize he seems to have second thoughts about that. Why do you feel he backtracked?

OLIVIA: Because I wasn't being realistic with him about my feelings. Ray felt as if I were judging him, and that wasn't what I was trying to do. I was working hard to cover my true feelings so I didn't compromise the vow I had made prior to his return to town.

ME: Did you find it hard at any point to stay true to that vow?

OLIVIA: (she laughs again). Boy did I? You know Chelle, I have a close spiritual walk with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but I am human. I'm made of flesh and blood too, but there were times I was wondering if His blood was going to be enough to cover the sins of my flesh and blood, if you know what I mean. It was a battle on many occasions when Ray and I were alone. But Holy Spirit guided me through and kept me strong. I almost lost Ray because of that vow. But I conceded to God that if I lost him for that reason, he wasn't mine to begin with.

ME: I feel you. But I don't know many women who could've held strong under such pressure, myself included. You're a great role model for many women to look up to. How do you advise someone in such a situation to stand strong under that kind of pressure?

OLIVIA: Well, if you've made a vow to keep yourself pure to God regardless of whether you're a virgin or not, you have to stand strong for something. It's foolish to believe you won't be tempted, or that you can do it on your own. Both are so far from the truth. But when you realize that you have to completely rely on Him and begin to do that, you're closer to winning the battle. And it's important to know His Word. When you call Scripture to remembrance during temptation, you'll know that He will keep you in perfect peace. You'll recall that He knows the plans for your life to cause you to prosper and not harm. And you'll know that He'll work all situations out for your good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

ME: Preach it Minister Olivia! (I laugh)

OLIVIA: (She laughs as well). Not quite, but His Word does keep me.

ME: With the heated things going on between you and Ray your two primary stylists Kianna and Angel had drama as well, which led to a knock-down, drag out fight. How does that unfold in Book 2?

OLIVIA: (She blows out a breath). Well, you might recall in book 1 Angel and I did come back together to discuss it all. Unfortunately, her and Kianna were not able to move past that point and someone was not able to come back to the shop to move forward with the rest of us.

ME: One of the clients, Ame, recorded the drama as it unfolded and posted it to social media. It seems to have an impact on the opening of your new salon in Buckhead in book 2. How do you deal with that?

OLIVIA: Whew! Well that one breaks out into a scandal of epic proportions. I have to face some formidable foes in attempting to open that second shop and there are many out there that don't want to see it come to pass. But when you serve a God like mine you don't fret nor worry, but you hand it over to Him and allow His will to be done. So, even if things don't unfold the way we desire, it works out for the best. Plus, I met some new friends during that ordeal as well.

ME: Your nail tech Nikki has some serious drama brewing in book 2 that is unknown to you. How did you miss everything that was going on with her right under your nose?

OLIVIA: I was consumed with the twists and turns of my new relationship with Raymond as well as the opening of the second shop. Not to mention although you all will have the opportunity to read her story, Nikki is a very private person. There are a lot of rumors floating around out there about her, the marriage, and her friend, but there's no facts behind them. My wonderful staff of Belinda, Darla, and Tyrone enjoy nothing more than gossiping. It doesn't matter to them if it's true or not. So, often I ignore their gossip, unless I see firsthand evidence. Nikki worked hard to cover up what was going on with her. I had my own concerns but she directly dismissed them.

ME: What about when things became explosive at, well I don't want to name the event and give away things to come in book 2, but what about the catastrophe at the big social event? At that point you welcomed her into your home. You knew what she was going through but you let her slip through your fingers once again. Why?

OLIVIA: You can only do so much for a person. If they're not willing to change the cycle themselves, all of your assistance is in vain. I begged and pleaded with her but at the end of the day, she had to make her own choices. I could only be there to catch her when she fell.

ME: Olivia there's something that Nikki is wishing for from the beginning of book 2, that actually comes true for her towards the end of book 2. What's your thoughts on that?

OLIVIA: Be careful what you wish for. When something appears too good to be true, usually it is. You have to count the cost for what you want in life. Sometimes it's worth it, and other times it isn't. That's all I have to say on that matter.

ME: And of course I can't forget Mr. Wesley. He's something special for the young ladies, especially the single ones. Talk to us about him.

OLIVIA: And the not so single ones, too. Many women both married and single fall in lust with Wes. And yes, I said lust. Don't get me wrong, he's a great guy, but many of them haven't taken out the chance to get to know him. Wes has his own relationship with the Lord and he's growing and maturing, but he's been hurt in the past, too. So he's at a point in life where he's not sure what he wants. That's a dangerous place to be because many people close to you get hurt. He has some serious maturing to do. Unfortunately, his choices will hurt others in the process, but you all will have to wait until books 2 and 3 come out to see what I mean.

ME: Wow! Sounds like there's lots of drama waiting for us at the shop. I can't wait until it's release.

OLIVIA: There's drama, inspiration as usual, and definitely life lessons. It's not all fun and games, but there are teachable moments that your readers will be able to relate to. It's great stuff and very heart warming. Yes, there are still the moments where you want to fight some of the characters, as I've heard your readers express in the past. There are times your heart will break, but in the end you will see each of them grow in their own way. And we only hope everyone can take something from it to grow on in their own personal lives.

ME: Okay. That's what I'm talking about. Well, our readers will have to wait until the end of May to get the drama. But thank you for stopping in with us, Olivia.

OLIVIA: Thanks for having me once again.

Writer Wednesday, Arabian Nights...

It's another #writerwednesday. Olivia and Raymond have been going through the ringer about his ex-wife Bethany and her attachment to him. It's definitely placed a strain on the marriage. Here's a snippet of the goings on in their lives...

BEJEWELED: STANDING STRONG
*************************************************************************
“Come on, everyone, let’s get inside. I think the ceremonies are about to start,” Olivia stated, pointing in the direction of the auditorium. The lobby was emptying as people made their way to their seats.

She opened her little gold clutch after feeling it buzzing underneath her arm. Glancing at her phone inside her purse, she saw Raymond’s picture lighting up the ID.

“Ladies, go ahead without me. I’ll be in there in just a sec,” she said, pushing the green phone icon.

“We’ll save a seat for you, Mrs. O,” Maia stated, following Darla, Belinda and the other staff inside.

“Yes?” she answered after she walked to a corner alone.

“Where are you?”

“I’m here at the show. Where do you think I am?” Her heart beat rapidly as she wondered what he wanted. She really didn’t want to argue with him right now. All she wanted was a peace of mind to take in this awards show with her.

“I mean exactly where at?” he asked again in a husky tone.

“Ray, what is it you want? The show’s about to start in a few minutes and I don’t want to miss a moment of it,” she stated in a sterner tone than she meant.

“And neither do I.”

Olivia spun around and saw him walking through the entrance doors. She tried to hold a firm and obstinate attitude. But her heart melted at the sight of the love of her life walking through those doors. He wore white linen pants with an open collared white short sleeved dress shirt and a white linen jacket tossed over his left shoulder.

“Why are you here?” she asked.

“You think I was gonna let you do this by yourself? Besides, I’d be a damned fool to let you out the house in that dress alone. Come on, let’s go,” he stated, grabbing her by the hand and escorting his wife through the auditorium doors.

Ty & Black Up Close...

Hey girlfriends! Your diva is back and I've got a treat in store for you. Today I have been tasked with interviewing none other than Terrence Franklin. Boo, you may know him better as "Black." Mmhmm, he's here with his sexy, chocolate, fine self! Woo! Somebody bring me my fan.

He's quite a character and everyone loves to hate him, but some of y'all know you love to love him, too. If that wasn't so, girlfriends, he wouldn't have played around on Angel as much as he did. Yeah, I see yo' slip showing, boo. Some of y'all same ones been creeping with him, or dreaming 'bout creeping with him.

Anyhoo, let's get on with the getting on of things. He just stepped into the room.

TYRONE: Black, heyyyy! It's good to see you. (Laughs nervously)

BLACK: Yeah. It's good to be back.

TYRONE: So, in book one you know divas was pulling your card. Honey, you ran them women crazy. I couldn't tell if Angel was coming or going from one day to the next. You used to have her running up out that shop trying to chase you down. I know one day she left outta there so fast tryna catch you at home, I thought fire was gon' catch her tail. Whatever happened with that anyway?

BLACK: Nothing. I mean people often misunderstand me, ya' feel me? I know the day you're talking about, and I was actually at home sick in bed. She got angry because she thought she was gonna catch me in something that just didn't happen.

TYRONE: Not that time anyway. (smacks lips) You really think you're misunderstood, Black?

BLACK: Definitely! I mean people don't really know my story. You'll learn more about me in the last book in the series. People will really understand I'm a good guy.

TYRONE: Black, what impact did your infidelities have on TJ if any?

BLACK: My lil' man is cool. I mean I want him to always have respect for women. I never took him around another woman...for the most part. And he's never seen me lay a hand on his mama. So all he sees is when Angel gets all worked up and we start arguing. I've tried to protect him from my life as much as I could.

TYRONE: Honey, chilrin' pick up more than you could ever imagine. They see what you don't see, and they watching when you think they ain't. Black, we always seen you and Kianna flirting in the shop. Some of us had our thoughts about what y'all was up to, but didn't y'all care about what Angel thought or how it was affecting her?

Picture
BLACK: Hell yeah, I cared 'bout what Angel thought. Angel was my first and only love. That girl was and still is my everything. She needed something from me that I didn't know if I was capable of giving. I mean she let me know there was a side of her that I forgot to love. And she was right, I didn't take time to get to really know or love that other side. The way I played it with Kianna...man that was crazy! I didn't mean no harm but I knew if I ignored Kianna, she'd really show out in that shop. See for real, women play little mind games and do subliminal shit--"

TYRONE: Hey! Watch your language. Chelle don't play all that on her blog.

BLACK: My bad. Excuse me peeps. But women play all these games, and that's all Kianna was doing. She'd get started on that flirting stuff and to protect Angel I had to go along with it. I knew if I didn't she'd be acting a fool up in there. And then Angel would really be hurt. I showed that girl a lot of disrespect and I wished I never had. I wished I had protected my Angel more, but I didn't. But we all have to stand up to our wrongs. Now it's my time to stand strong in book 4...hence the name, BeJeweled: Standing Strong.

Picture

TYRONE: Honey, walk us through the bedroom scene. What was going through your mind when Angel walked up in there?

BLACK: Maannnn, I was caught up. That's a Wendy Williams moment. I can't believe you bought that up!

TYONE: Well, I did hear y'all was getting buck wild up in that room. You really know how to handle some things, Black? (winks)

BLACK: Hey, dawg! Don't be coming at me like that! I don't know who you thought I was, but standing strong or not, I'm not the one you wanna try.

(Olivia enters the room).

TYRONE: Calm down, calm down. I didn't mean no disrespect, baby.

BLACK: Man, I told you I ain't that one. I ain't yo' baby.

OLIVIA: Gentlemen, please calm down. Now Tyrone, Chelle trusted you with her blog today. I expect that you would remain professional on here at all times, and encourage our guests to be inspirational. Black, please take your seat again. I assure you Tyrone will finish this interview with the highest level of diplomacy and respect.

BLACK: Mrs. O, I don't mean no disrespect to you, but I'm not feeling dude. I ain't never cared for Tyrone, and I'm not gonna--

TYRONE: Care for me? Care for me? Boo, you don't have to like me! I don't like--

OLIVIA: Tyrone! Stop this moment. Gentlemen, I think it's time to bring this interview to an end. Black, on behalf of the readers and Chelle, thanks for stopping by. Is there anything you would like to leave with the readers about the upcoming novel.

BLACK: Man, the truth is so explosive, I don't think The House of BeJeweled will ever be the same.

OLIVIA: Black...is that a threat?

BLACK: No, ma'am. That's the truth. Just get ready. Cuz everyone will have to bear their cross.

OLIVIA: Thanks again, Black. Alright readers, there you have it. There's some things in store for book four that you won't want to miss. In the meantime, don't forget to get caught up on the series by clicking the Amazon link below.

A 5-YEAR SENTENCE:

You had the cancer scare
You had it cut out
You had treatments
You learned how to breathe again
You were exercising
Being healthy is what you always were
Doctor said you have a 10% chance it can come back
5 years is what they told you
Let’s count together 1-2-3
So as your friends were dying off
From different types of cancer
Your mortality was in question
You started saying you lived a good life
You needed to finish everything you put on your bucket list
You were scaring your spouse
Where was your faith?
A tear ran down your cheek
You said, “I have 5 years!”

Prayer As Communication...

4/21/2016

Picture
Today's post is a #throwbackthursday post from my old blog, Writing My Dreams.

Prayer is a simple tool of communication to use to draw closer to the Almighty God. It's nothing to be scared of, yet, something you should have great respect of, and come with a humble mind, heart, and spirit. Read on...

Prayer...that's what I'm thankful for. Today's a thankful Thursday and as I write this post, I think about all the blessings in my life. Those that I show great appreciation for and those that I take for granted. However, the majority of my blessings have come by way of prayer. Whether it was my prayers or someone praying for me, I have been immensely blessed in this life.

Prayer is my way of communing with God. I recently spoke with a neighbor and had a discussion about some personal things. I told her to pray about it, and she said to me that she wasn't sure how to pray. I have often heard this from people when we discuss the topic of prayer. My response to her was the same one that my grandmother gave to me years ago. Talk to Him, as if you were talking to me.

Prayer doesn't always have to be this elaborate affair with big vocabulary words filled with quotes from Scripture. Don't get me wrong, there is a time for that type of prayer as well. But if you can't do that, you shouldn't allow it to stop you from praying. Talk to Him throughout the day about what's on your heart. Open up and converse with Him the way you would a dear friend. Ask Him to show you what He desires you to pray for. Sometimes, those prayers have nothing to do with us, but someone or something else.

Use prayer as an effective means to:

  1. Communicate with God about your thoughts.
  2. Know Him on a more intimate and personal level.
  3. Understand His will for your life.
  4. Share the desires of your heart.
  5. Express your love for Him.
  6. Gain clarity about situations.
  7. Obtain direction for your life.

Falling In Love Again...

4/20/2016

Picture
The final book in The House of Bejeweled will be coming out next month. This #writerwednesday I'm sharing an excerpt from BeJeweled: Standing Strong. And guess what???? Angel, Black, and Kianna are back!

“You’re falling in love again. You’re falling for the circumstances, Angel. You want to heal him and your heart is breaking with what he’s going through. You’re reminiscing about why you fell in love with him in the first place. This isn’t good, baby and you need to take a break for a while,” Marsha advised.

Angel laughed and stood. She paced back and forth in front of the bench. “You’re confusing my dedication and loyalty to him as the father of my son, for me falling in love with him. I’m not falling in love with Black again, Marsha.”

“You told him you still love him,” Marsha disputed.

Angel remained silent as she recalled the conversation she had just had with Black.

“How much of that did you hear?” Angel asked.

“Enough. Enough to know you need to guard your heart and keep living your life. Look, Terrence is my son. But I love you, too, and I only want what’s best for you. I don’t want to see you hurt again or my grandbaby go through the pain he went through when you and Terrence broke up. He’s at a crucial stage right now. If you two were to get back together, he’d be excited to see his parents together. But what would happen to him if it didn’t work out again?”

“But you’re reading too much into this,” Angel denied.

“Maybe…but just remember, just because he got shot it didn’t change who he is. Don’t forget what he took you through before. Terrence is still the same person he always was. He’s a whore…just like his daddy. Or as you young folks say, a THOT,” Marsha rebutted.

Angel laughed so hard she had to sit back down on the park bench. “Okay, Marsha, I hear you. But you got it all wrong.”

“I hope so for your heart’s sake, darling. I hope so,” Marsha proclaimed.

Angel didn’t know how long she could go on lying to herself the way she was lying to everyone else.

So, girlfriend, what you waiting on? READ!

ARABIAN NIGHTS:

“Gorgeous! Over here!” Tyrone called out to her pulling her from her thoughts. Sporty as ever, she took in his blue gingham button down shirt, a blue blazer, and white slacks. The yellow argyle tie and matching pocket square set the ensemble off just right. And in original Tyrone style, he wore a pair of white oxford style Stacy Adams on his feet.

Olivia hurried over to him and greeted him with a hug and an air kiss as was his style in public. Tyrone took his white Fedora into his hands and introduced her around to the event organizers, Chuck, Tandra and Ciarra.

“Thank you for loaning him out to us, Mrs. O. I know you’re busy with two shops now, but you don’t know how much it means to have him on the team again this year,” Ciarra stated. She was just over six feet and rocked a platinum blonde large Afro on her gorgeous mahogany skin.

“It’s my pleasure. How do you four make all of this magic happen?” Olivia asked.

“Your Highness here snaps his fingers and twinkles a little of his fabulousness and makes it happen,” Chuck said, referring to Tyrone.

Everyone laughed shaking their heads as Chuck played up to Tyrone’s ego.

“No, really, Mrs. O, we’re the organizers. But we have a large group of people here tonight that are a part of the planning and implementation to make this magic happen,” Ciarra explained.

“This is magnificent. You all are so amazing. If you continue to do work on this level, it’s never a problem for you to borrow Tyrone from the shop. Now his groupies on the other hand…may not feel the same,” Olivia joked.

The group laughed. “I’m sure Ty keeps it live up in that shop. He keeps us hollering when we get together,” Tandra shared. “But he’s my boy and I wouldn’t trade him in for anything.”

Olivia smiled at the young lady. She was a bubble of energy. Her long red tresses falling in curls and waves around her shoulders showcased a mocha colored beautiful, heart-shaped face with deep, twinkling dimples, and merry, chocolate-colored large, round eyes.

“Honey, Ty is the fiercest diva of ‘em all. He’s gonna show these one-trick ponies a thing or two tonight!” Chuck declared.

Tyrone stood smiling and basking in the attention. “Baby, I can’t even begin to teach these heifers nothing. They not ready for all this fabulousness. It would take more than a night to bask in the knowledge of being fierce that I hold. Girlfriend, you been around me for five years and you’re still learning,” Tyrone said to Chuck making the others laugh.

Fab Friday Feature w/John Clark...

Today's Fab Friday Feature spotlights John Clark, author, columnist, and an inspirational, beautiful spirit! Read on for my wonderful interview with John for a bit of inspiration.
CHELLE: John, welcome to the Beautifully Inspired Blog, where we write the script to our beautifully inspired lives! Getting to the heart of the matter, most writers fall into one of two categories, with a few being special enough to fall in between. J What are you? Plotter or Pantser?

JOHN: I never thought much about it, but I would have to say I am a pantser. My background is print journalism – newspaper reporter and columnist – and so I am used to going out, gathering information, doing interviews, and then putting the story together in my head on the way back to the office.

It is said that in writing a newspaper story, when you come up with a great “lead” (opening paragraph), the rest of the story pretty much writes itself. That is true, to a certain extent, although it still takes a little editing and moving things around sometimes as you put the story together.

I did do a little planning for my current project (a 35,000-word non-fiction book) – even hand-wrote a one-page outline for it! That’s the most “planning” I’ve ever really done for a book. Not saying that’s a good thing; it’s just the way I do it.

CHELLE: Interesting. How did you first begin your career in print journalism?

JOHN: I worked for a  number of newspapers across the state of Texas, after graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of Houston. The biggest story I ever covered was the October 1991 massacre at the Luby's cafeteria in Killeen, Texas. I actually won an Associated Press award for my coverage of that tragic event. But one story that comes to mind when you ask that question is a story I wrote once about a young man who was murdered at the pawn shop where he worked. Everybody I talked to said he was a wonderful kid who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nobody had anything bad to say about him at all. So I decided to try and interview his family, girlfriend and co-workers, and write a feature story about his life. It seems like criminals always get more publicity than their victims, so I wanted to do something to honor this kid. When I approached his boss at the pawn shop, the guy agreed to an interview, but first he looked at me and said, in no uncertain terms, "If you do anything to hurt Troy, I'll come looking for you." I assured him that was not my intention, and the story turned out great.

CHELLE: Human interest stories, beautiful! You obviously create great work, having made a career out of writing. But when the pen is put down, the laptop is placed away, no deadlines looming, and you’re in the comfort of your own home and skin, who is John Clark, the man?

JOHN: Here’s who I am – an egomaniac with an inferiority complex. There is a little more to it than that, of course, but that pretty much sums it up.

I grew up playing sports, and my athletic activity now is mostly limited to playing golf, which I love. When I first went to Spain five years ago to backpack the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, I discovered a love for distance walking, although here at home I fight my natural laziness and lack of time for exercise. I play guitar, and have performed as a singer/songwriter and as a guitarist in a couple of bands.

My trip to Spain was the first time I ever went overseas, and although it scared me half to death at first, once I got over my fears and settled in to the adventure, I had the time of my life. I went back again, and now am planning a trip to Thailand. In a few years, I will travel around the world, just me, a backpack and my trusty laptop.

That’s enough. I don’t really enjoy talking about myself. If there’s a horn to be tooted, I’d rather let someone else do it.

CHELLE: That’s living life! Have you ever traveled for any stories?

JOHN: I wrote a weekly column for the local paper during my second trek along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and I drove two weeks along Route 66 last summer doing interviews and shooting photographs all along the way for an upcoming book. Occasionally, I'll make a little road trip on the weekend in search of something unusual and interesting to write about.

CHELLE: With all that goes on in a writer’s life, how do you create work/life balance being an author?

JOHN: Luckily, I have a supportive wife, and the kids are all grown, so I’m able to spend basically as much of my “spare” time as I choose in my office at home, writing. Still, life gets in the way sometimes, and I continue to be forced to learn patience, as far as the projects I am working on.

Again, stemming from my daily newspaper background, I like to write the story, get ‘er done, file it and move on to the next story. I’m a meticulous proofreading perfectionist when it comes to my work, but once it’s finished, it’s finished. One of the things my editors have always liked about me is that I produce clean copy that doesn’t require much editing.

When I get home from work, and on the weekends, I write until I get either tired, bleary-eyed or distracted, then I force myself to stop and go mow the grass, or lay on the couch for a while and watch some TV.

Right now, I’m getting ready to go out on a beautiful sunshiny day to a local art festival and try to scratch up a feature story for next week’s column.

CHELLE: You mentioned that your children are grown. Has your career choice as a writer had an impact on them?

JOHN: My youngest daughter is a terrific writer.  She has that gift of writing from the heart that makes good writing good.  And my stepson says he is inspired by my writing, and by my continuing to pursue my passion and my dreams.

CHELLE: Describe a day around your house and in your ordinary life where writing is not key.

JOHN: Hmm, let’s see. Writing is normally a part of everyday life for me. Not only does writing help keep me somewhat sane, it’s hard for me not to write, because I think I am wasting valuable time.

I don’t go to work at my dreaded day job on Saturdays and Sundays (occasionally other days, as well!). So normally on the weekend, I brew a cup of coffee, head to my little office and check e-mail, see who’s doing what on Facebook and such. Then, I’ll start working on something – blogs, my newspaper column, my new book, marketing my already-published books. I don’t have a particular schedule – which again is probably not a good thing. One of my weaknesses is lack of organization, not just for my writing biz but life in general.

If it’s Saturday, I may take a break for breakfast, but probably just plow on through for a few hours and then have lunch and watch some sports on TV or something. Sunday mornings, I’m on the golf course, and then I’ll usually write for a few hours in the afternoon. Then, it’s time to get ready for the work week ahead. Back to reality.

CHELLE: Most authors have a routine they settle into when they prepare to write. Yet, others toss routine out the window and go with the flow. Tell us about your writing routine.

JOHN: I’m not sure there’s much to report on this. Sometimes I may write 500 words a day; sometimes I may write 2,000 words in a day.

My newspaper columns are between 1,200 and 1,400 words, normally. I write about a variety of topics, with the majority being human interest stories, based on 30-minute to one-hour interviews. Transcribing the recorded interview takes the greatest amount of time, but like I said, I tend to pretty much compose the story in my head before I ever sit down to write it, so most of the time I can knock out a column in a hour or two.

Being mostly a pantser (I have to admit I’d never heard that term before), I tend to go with the flow. If the flow slows to a trickle, I’ll probably shut everything down for a while, and come back to it later. If it ain’t workin’, it ain’t workin’. Take a break. There’s always something else I can work on: audio book narration, YouTube videos, research.

CHELLE: What genre do you write and why? What authors have influenced your writings?

JOHN: I’ve mentioned how my journalism background affects my writing. And I am heavily influenced by Ernest Hemingway. I love his simple style, and I read somewhere a long time ago that Hemingway said to never use a word longer than two syllables.

That is pretty hard to do, but I think the real message is to keep it simple. I know I don’t want to have to put down something I am reading to go look up a word in the dictionary.

I write exclusively non-fiction. I love telling people’s stories. Everyone has a great story, although it can take a skilled interviewer sometimes to find it. Interviewing has always been one of my strengths, and if you sit me down with someone, I guarantee you I will come away with an interesting story about their life. It’s mostly a matter of careful listening. The biggest mistake interviewers make is not listening to the answers to their questions. Seems simple enough, right? Too many people, though, are already thinking about the next question they’re going to ask and they forget to listen – really listen – to what the person is saying. I rarely have a set list of questions to ask, because the interview almost always goes in an unexpected direction, if you listen carefully.

For example, I was interviewing a guy about his vast comic book collection. This guy has every comic book known to man, and that was the basis for the story. A comic book collector. Well, as he is showing me his comics, and answering a question, he off-handedly says, “Yeah, and I saw my father beat my mother to death when I was a kid.”

He just kept on talking, and I let him go for about 30 seconds to see what was coming next, but he completely passed over this incredible statement about his childhood. So I stopped him and said, “Hang on a second. Let’s back up for a minute.”

The story was still about this comic book collector, but now I had a fascinating hook on which to hang the rest of the story.

CHELLE: Amazing!! As an author, my mind instantly weaves a novel out of that. Did you follow-up and do another story on him?

JOHN: I just left that as the hook and sort of weaved it in and out of the story, using it as a way for readers to get to know him better. It was a pretty strong hook!

CHELLE: How do you handle writer’s block?

JOHN: I don’t really experience serious writer’s block, but like I said earlier, if the river stops flowing, I just let things rest for a while. Work on something else writing-related, or go do something else entirely.

CHELLE: Mountains or the beach?

JOHN: Definitely a beach guy. I grew up in Houston, Texas, an hour’s drive from Galveston. I also grew up going to my grandparents’ lake house on weekends, so it’s a bit of a toss-up, whether I want to buy a beach house or a lake house, when my ship comes in.

CHELLE: Provide one marketing tip for upcoming authors that have worked for you.

JOHN: Marketing is something I know very little about, but something I am learning. I have a website and an author’s page, and I spend probably way too much time posting links to those sites and my books on social media, but that’s about all I know how to do at this point.

When my current project is finished, a friend who is a marketing guru is going to help me with all the technical things that right now are just overwhelming, so I am excited about that.

CHELLE: If there was one thing you would want your readers to know after reading your works, what would it be?

JOHN: I guess it would be that people all over the world are pretty much all the same. That’s one thing I have learned, and maybe that is why I enjoy writing about people. People are fascinating, and for the most part, they are good. It doesn’t seem like it sometimes, when you read the headlines or watch the evening news, but when you come right down to it, most people are good people, and the world is a beautiful place. And wherever you are in life, whatever you are doing, if you are doing things with good intentions, a good heart, doing the best you can, you are doing just fine.

CHELLE: We live life beautifully inspired here, at The Beautifully Inspired Blog. Leave us with an inspirational post, comprised of three words.

JOHN: Follow your dreams.

CHELLE: Alright readers! You heard it…follow your dreams. You all know how passionate I feel about that one statement. That’s the purpose of this blog, to inspire you to live your dreams and live a beautifully inspired life! A Turn of Events...

It's another #writerwednesday and with the book discussion of book 2 in The House of BeJeweled coming up, I thought I would share a scene from Bejeweled: What A Tangled Web We Weave.
EXCERPT CHAPTER: A TURN OF EVENTS

“You may not know me, but I’m—”

Olivia stuck out her hand and took the soft, warm, brown one in her own. “I know who you are. And to what do I owe this pleasure, Ms. Kirkland?” Olivia asked, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. She had known there was a reason behind her coming to BeJeweled today for a hair appointment. She had never visited the salon before, and Olivia was apprehensive. She did not like feeling like her stylists or salon were being used to gain a hot story.

“Straight from the hip. I like that. Well, as you know, I have a talk show, All About Atlanta. My show features guests from the music and entertainment industries as well as local celebrities. I would be remiss to acknowledge the fact that I have been following your story in the news rather closely. In all honesty, I think they’re on a witch hunt. There has been some time since their hottest gossip lead, and thanks to yours truly, I no longer am providing those.”

“So what is it that you want or need from me, Ms. Kirkland?” Olivia’s arms were folded across her breasts, and she stood in a protective stance. Cocking one head to the side, she wanted the woman to get to her point.

“Please call me Chris.”

“Alright, Chris it is, then. What is it that I can do for you?” Olivia was not one to play games. And where she was usually patient and kind, her shop, stylists, and name were all under attack, and she had no time to coddle anyone. She was in a mothering and protective mode.

“I would like to get your story out to the people.” Christina splayed her hands out in front of her as if indicating she was laying all her cards on the table.

“Why? Running out of celebrity gossip?”

“I don’t do gossip shows, Olivia. I interview celebrities, and I am committed to presenting them in a favorable light and helping them further their careers and not destroy them. I understand you must be wary about me approaching you and coming to your shop today. You have every right to be, and yes, I did plan it. Although you don’t know me, I would like to say, please trust me. I only want to share your story with the people. I was burned by the news reporters in this city…my own peers, if you will. No one was interested in giving me a fair shot. At least not in the beginning, and when someone did finally take a chance on me, I wanted to do everything I could to give that back to others when the opportunity presented itself. And I have done that in small ways here and there. But I have to admit; I’ve been quite angry at the way they have tried to drag your name through the mud. It reminded me of the witch hunt they were on when my own scandal broke out. As a news reporter, I knew we were to keep our noses clean at all times. But I slipped up. I read up on the history of the shop and spoke with a lot of business people in the hair industry and business owners that have been here in downtown Atlanta for some time. They all held your mother in high regard. Now I don’t know you from Adam, but I can tell you’re getting a bad rep. I don’t like the way the attack is panning out for your second salon opening in Buckhead. And if there’s anything I can do to help stop that attack, I want to do it.”

“What’s in it for you, Chris? Revenge? A good story? What? I mean, if you’re wanting my attention, you have to keep it real with me. These people have attacked my stylists, my salon, and my reputation.”

“I just want to bring the truth. I want to stop unfair assaults, and we need more salons in the Buckhead area to serve diverse clientele. I live, work, and play there and I believe you have a lot to bring to the Buckhead. I believe you have a beautiful spirit, and I don’t want to see you crushed. Trust me, reporters can be ruthless. I’ve been one for several decades now, so I know.” Christina folded her arms, raised an eyebrow, and waited to hear what Olivia’s response would be.

CONCEALED BETRAYAL 4 EXCERPT:

It was a Tuesday evening and I’d invited Harmony and Gail to Caramel Mix. Tuesday night was always amateur night. I normally had the most fun there on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Caramel Mix was a lounge in downtown Atlanta that Vernell and I owned. A lot of local artists, singers, poets, bands etc. would request to perform there. It was a beautiful establishment that catered to the locals.

I was first introduced to Caramel Mix by Gail. She was a frequent customer there because of her literary career. It was the one thing she had established herself to help keep her on the straight and narrow. That was until Malcolm got a hold of her, then nothing else mattered but him. I hated the way things went down for her concerning him but I hoped that now she would put her all into her pen and dish out another best-seller. I remembered when I was going through my hardship with Vernell and the divorce was new, Gail convinced me to write a book. I never did publish it but writing out my feelings helped me get through one of the toughest times in my life. I now keep a steady journal just to keep my mind clear.

Earlier that day, I’d sent Harmony a text asking about her work schedule and if she and Gail could come to Caramel Mix for amateur night. It was her early day so she was getting off at three. She said she’d have her mother there no matter what. At seven, the two of them came walking through our doors.

The place was live and amateur night was well underway. We’d already had a few poets and a singer. A band was due to play in a few minutes. The place was packed. Our red and black décor was elegant and sexy. Caramel Mix wasn’t necessarily a restaurant but we did serve drinks and finger food. Our waiters were busy making tips.

“Ladies!” I said as they came walking through the door. Gail looked like she’d lost a little weight but her smile was bright and honest. She was happy to be there. She wore loose jeans with a white blouse and white sandals. She wore her own hair that day which was pretty long since the last time I’d seen it, right past her ear lobes. It was swopped in a pretty way over her left eye with the other side tucked behind her ear. I was pretty sure Harmony had a hand in that.

“Hey. Thanks for the invite. I feel like I’m breathing new air. I haven’t been out of the house like this in a while.”

“I’m so glad you came,” I said. Harmony stood off to the side letting us “besties” hug and kiss. She stood in a long, grey, spaghetti strapped dress with flat black sandals on. Her hair came down to her shoulders. She had her purse in front of her legs with both hands. “You look gorgeous.” I said to her.

We hugged. “You do too, Auntie.”

I turned to find our table I’d reserved for us. My pink sundress swayed behind me as I walked. I’d recently gotten micro braids so I didn’t have to deal with my hair on gym days. They were tucked into a bun at the top of my head. I quickly found our booth and one of the waiters quickly asked for our drink order and walked away.

“How are you feeling, Gail?”

“Better. One day at a time, right?”

“Exactly,” I said “The kids with Jasmine?” “Of course,” Harmony answered smiling. Jasmine was a really good friend. The type of friend any single mother would appreciate. I thought about that for a minute and decided I would bring that up in our first Single Mother’s group. “So I have news and plans. First things first, Zoe is pregnant.” Harmony smiled already knowing the good news.

“She called this morning. Had her first check up. She’s eight weeks. She said she just found out a week or so ago. She’d been so busy with her internship that it didn’t dawn on her that she was late.”

“That’s good news, Zora. I know you’re happy,” Gail spoke.

“Wow. Eight weeks,” Harmony said.

“I know. I’m so very happy for her. Secondly, I’m having a 4th of July event at my house. All are invited. You both and the kids. Savannah is coming with Douglas and maybe Christian. I think Eugene is home, but I’m not sure. I wanna see if Zoe can come back for the holiday but since she just left here, I don’t know if she will be able to.”

“I hope so. Last time she was here, we didn’t get a chance to hang out like we normally do.”

“Right. I talked to Ricko and I guess he’s gonna try to come by but we’ll see.”

Our drinks came and we all took a sip. I said, “Gail, this is your spot, where you get your literary juices flowing. Are you going to start back writing?”

She smiled. “Possibly so. I have a lot to put out. That reminds me. “ She turned to Harmony. “I’d love to swing by my house and get some of my notebooks. It will keep me busy some days when you and the kids are gone.”

“We can go when we leave here if you want,” Harmony told her mother.

“I’m so glad you are doing better. I was so worried, Gail. You’ve never been this low. I just didn’t know if you were going to bounce back.”

“Well I had a good friend help me see the big picture. I do feel much better.” Both Harmony and I smiled.

“I am the president of a new group at church, Single Mother’s group.” “Really?” Harmony asked.

“Yes, our first meeting is on Friday at the church. I wanted to tell you about it, Harmony, in case you and Jasmine might be interested in attending.”

“I like that Auntie. If my schedule allows me to I will attend.”

I nodded my head. “But you will never guess who my vice president is.”

“Who?”

“Tina…Mitchell.”

Gail’s eyes got big. She was with me the entire time I went through my ordeal with her and Vernell. I had so much anger back then. It was a mess. She knew, better than anyone, how I felt about that woman.

“Are you going to be able to handle that?” she asked

“At first I thought, no. But I talked it out with Vernell and he really made me see things clearly. This is a blessing and I love to do things like this at the church. I can’t let her steal this from me, you know.”

“How are you and Uncle Vernell nowadays?” “We are great honey.” I laughed.

So did Gail.

“We are getting close and I’m happy with that. He’s been such a rock for me these last few months.”

“I’ve always admired that about your two. You guys had a lot of ups and downs but you’ve always had
such a strong love for each other. I know you two are going to get married again,” Gail told me.

“Now that I don’t know. I think we are having too much fun dating each other. He goes to his home and I go to mine…see you later.” I waved my hand as if waving a fly away.

“Come on now, Aunt Zora. You have been with him for almost thirty years. His entire Navy career. There’s gotta be more to your feelings than you are putting out.”

I didn’t say anything to Harmony’s comment. Maybe she was right. Maybe she wasn’t. I just didn’t want to jeopardize what we had. I liked it as is.

“I don’t know. I can’t predict the future but right now, I’m enjoying myself. I think he is too.”

“Since we are updating each other, I guess I should fill you two in on something. I think I found a boyfriend...or a guy I like or…I don’t know. I like him.”

Gail and I turned our heads over to Harmony in a manner of shock. Since Kai’s father, she never spoke about a man. Just work and the kids.

“Really?” I asked.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Gail asked.

“Well it’s new. I met him at the shelter where I volunteer.”

I noticed Gail’s demeanor change when Harmony mentioned the shelter. I was pretty sure it brought back memories of Mr. Jones, but Harmony continued.

“He specializes in Gynecology and he volunteers at the shelter. He also works under a prestigious doctor who sometimes works at DeKalb Medical so I ran into him on Saturday during my lunch break. We talked and he wants to take me to dinner tomorrow night.”

“Look at you. And he has you smiling too, Harmony. Is he cute?” I asked.

“Zora!” Gail yelled at me.

“What? I’m just saying. We’re all grown here. Dish it out girl!”

“Yeah, he’s cute. He’s thirty-one. He’s really goal-oriented. I like that a lot.”

“That makes it all the better, a man that has something going for himself. I bet it feels good too. You now have someone to talk to, just casual conversation. I’m so glad you met someone.”

“I guess I am too.” Gail said.

“What do you mean you guess?” I asked.

“Well I’ve always been used to you being to yourself. Like Zora said, you haven’t even thought about a man since Chris.”

“I’ve been through a lot. Men haven’t always been good to me but I’m willing to take a chance. These last couple of months have been so trying and I just want something new. Even if he turns out to just be friend material, I’m fine with that. Maybe a little eye candy too,” Harmony threw in.
Gail and I busted out laughing. It really felt good to have my girl back. Harmony was smiling, so was Gail. I silently thanked God for bringing us through the storm.

When closing time arrived, I told Vernell I’d let him handle it on this own. I was beat. Jerrod was spending the night with Savannah. She had Christian for the night. By two in the morning, I knew my mother was knocked out cold so when Vernell asked me to go to his place and wait for him, I didn’t hesitate.

I walked into the cool one story home through the garage and fell onto the couch, I was tired. I picked up my phone just to mess around with it but realized I had a text from Zoe. What in the world, I thought. Her text said “Hey Ma’ you up?” She’d sent it three minutes before. I text back. “Yes. But the better question is why are you up?”

She sent back “LOL, your grandchild is giving me insomnia.”

I laughed to myself thinking about how bad my insomnia was with her. We continued our conversation.

Me: “Like mother like child. I was the same way with you.”

Zoe: “Really?”

Me: “Yes ma’am and it wasn’t a pretty sight. The doctor told me I was able to take Tylenol PM. That it was safe with you so I took that to help me sleep every night. Be careful though, you can get hooked on them.”

Zoe: “I will have to ask my doctor when I see him in a few weeks. Ahmad is over here snoring and I’m just up. LOL”

Me: “Poor baby. I know the feeling. I’m just getting in from the lounge. Your dad is still there, probably counting money. I’m beat. Oh, I wanted to tell you that I’m having a 4th of July celebration at the house. I would love for you and Ahmad to come.”

Zoe took a while to respond. I thought she’d dozed off. I was sure on my way to sleep as well. Then she text back.

Zoe: “Maybe. Ahmad is teaching summer classes. This internship keeps me busy. But I’ll let you know. How’s my baby behaving?”

Me: “Oh you know Grandma don’t play that. But your daddy over here is spoiling him. Him and his Nana. LOL”

Zoe: LOL That sure sounds like Daddy. I’m sure Grandma enjoys having him. Well I’m gonna try to sleep. I will text you when I think you’re up. Love you Mama.”

Me: “I love you too baby. I know I just saw you but Mama misses you so much. Sometimes I wish you lived closer. I’m gonna have to come get a room out there when the baby comes. LOL Sleep good and I’ll talk with you tomorrow.”

Zoe: LOL love you too. Come anytime! Kiss Daddy for me.”

I dragged myself from the couch and into Vernell’s bed. I thought for a moment about Zoe and her family. I was a proud mother. Then I thought about Ricko…and I started to worry.

Taking The Risk...

He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.
Muhammad Ali

Last Monday I was extremely nervous about an appearance I had to make at a book club at a library. It would be my first in-person author event, and while I was nervous about it, I was anticipating it as well.

I prepared everything I needed for my event, not sure how it would unfold. I had a team of supporters ready to go with me. Yet, fear had me in its grip. I can talk all day one-on-one to people, or a few people at once. But a crowd??? Whew!!! I was uncomfortable speaking to a group with all eyes on me. However, this was something I needed to do.

The group was small and intimate. The ladies were friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere warm and inviting. The presentation was excellent from the reading of certain chapters to the discussion on my books and writing. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and meeting new readers. When it was all said and done, I realized I look forward to doing this. I was born to do it and I cannot wait until the next event.

Whatever your fear and challenges are don't allow them to make you stagnant, hinder your growth, or block your progress. Overcome fear by having faith in the Almighty God, belief in yourself, and putting your best foot forward. Take the risk by stepping out and moving forward on your dreams.

Believe in yourself because you were given your dream for a reason. The passion that burns within you is placed there to inspire, encourage, and motivate others. But it's also there to grow you as an individual.

Step out of the shadow and don't be afraid to step into the light. There's a special light to shine on you and it's His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). Take the risk on you!
It's been another Monday Motivational Moment. Thank you for stopping by.

Feisty, energetic, lively, and hilarious! She is my heart and my everything! She holds nothing back, never bites her tongue, and this Aries makes no apologies for who she is.

On this Fab Friday, I'm featuring none other than Frieda Seals, my queen, my mother! She taught me what it meant to be strong, beautiful, and courageous.

My mother was the first person who told me I was beautiful. And when I doubted, she told me that if I didn't believe I was beautiful and think the world of myself, who else would.

When the world seemed to be against her, she stood strong with her back against the wind, not letting it break her down. She fought every last one of our battles, until we were old enough to fight our own. Then she stood in the background cheering us on and helping us through our own personal battles.

Picture
She was the one who introduced me to my first love, books. Patiently reading to me until I learned to do it at the tender age of four, her patience knew no bounds. Encouraging that first love of mine, she always took me to the library to continue to fan the flames of my passion.

Many rainy days or afternoons were spent on the bed with my mom reading books. The boredom most children experienced on those type days, I did not understand. There was no better way to spend a day than lying next to my mother, as we both read our books. Excitement filled me up each time we exchanged library books when I became a teenager, proving to me that our tastes were very similar.

Her imagination allowed her to create the most intriguing and engaging stories. Something I know all too well.

So this day, Friday, April 8th, I praise the Lord Almighty for blessing me with the woman I have been blessed to know as "Mama."

I will always be a Mama's girl and she will always be the center of my world. <3

She's an excellent mother, wife, and grandmother. She can often be seen dancing around the house, whether to the music pouring from the radio, or a beat in her head.

I love you, Mama! Happy 60th!!!

Breaking The Chains That Bind...

Picture
A nine-year-old little girl in Utah was raped by four men, while her mother sat in her basement smoking meth. That news scrolled on the ticker tape at the bottom of my television screen on Tuesday, April 5th. I was outraged at this horrific crime, wondering how we as mothers, as a nation, as a people get so lost in ourselves that we can allow our children to be victimized in such a manner.

When I got up to start my morning prayer, I prayed for that little girl. While I do not know her or her circumstances, I am moved in my heart to want to protect her. Yet, all I have to offer is prayer and declarations and decrees over her life. Too often throughout the world our children are victims of rape, molestation, abuse, homelessness, hunger, bullying, predators, poverty, abandonment, orphaned, and so much more.

As I prayed for this little girl, I began to pray for the children all over the world who are suffering at the hands of their victimizers. I pray our Heavenly Father's protection, peace, and comfort over their lives, and declare deliverance and healing for every one of them. All too often, children who have been victimized lash out in some form or other, which usually takes them on a path of self-destruction. They have been stripped of self-love, and self-esteem.

There is freedom and healing in our prayers and we have to pray for one another. We have to pray for these children, because they are our future. They need our covering from the plans of the enemy designed to destroy them and their future. However, I believe and therefore, declare that they shall live and not die, that they may declare the works of the Lord (Psalm 118:71). There is a testimony within that they must use to empower others. The Lord is fighting on their side and has guaranteed them the victory (Deuteronomy 20:4). Therefore, I declare they are healed and victorious, and every shackle and chain has been broken off their lives.

The power of prayer breaks the chains and shackles placed on our lives by those who victimize us. Some of the heinous acts I have listed above are enacted against us by those who are filled with an evil spirit. Only with prayer can we overcome what has been done to us (Mark 9:29). Understanding the power you unleash when you pray gives you the authority to break the chains that have been placed on your children and the children of the world. We have been given the authority to protect and heal them through our prayers (John 14:13-14).

Speaking into our children's lives and the lives of children across the world brings positive light into their lives. It serves as a counterattack against the enemy, stopping his destructive plans. We must believe there is power in prayer and speaking things that are not as though they were. It's our duty to speak life into our children, for we know that whatever we speak that's what will come to pass. "Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Proverbs 18:21

Straight Talk No Chaser...

4/6/2016

Picture
It's a #writerwednesday and I'm sharing a snippet from BeJeweled: A Beautiful Blend! Ladies, the fellas are getting together today and having straight talk no chaser! There are no filters today.

Let's be a fly on the wall and here what they have to say abut the "womenfolk."

EXCERPT_CHAPTER_SAVING WESLEY:

A knock at the door disturbed their conversation. They both looked at one another to determine who would answer it; nodding their head in agreement, they called out in unison, “Come in.”

The door swung open, and in walked Eric, Ali, and another good friend named Ricky.

James got up from his recliner and walked up to Ricky.

“Wassup, my man. I ain’t seen you in a minute,” James greeted Ricky with a large smile, giving what the fellas called ‘dap’, clasping their right hands together and pulling towards one another in a half-hug. James exchanged pound with Eric and Ali, too, before reclaiming his seat in his recliner.

“Nothin’ much, boss man. Just clocking the dollars,” Ricky replied. “I thought I needed to make an appearance to check on my cat over here.” Ricky walked towards Wesley and smiled at him as they gave dap.

“Wassup, cap, we got a prez for ya, my nig,” Eric said. “Give it to ‘im, Ali.” He gestured to a bag Ali was holding in his hands. Ali sat the bag on the coffee table where Wesley previously had his feet propped up.

“Yeah, man, we figured you needed this to complete the role. You can’t do a proper job without it,” Ali said, reaching into the bag.

“Man, what y’all fools tripping on?” Wesley smiled. Looking around the room, he could tell everyone was in on whatever was going on, including James who sat in his recliner with a smug look on his face.

“Well, since you wanted to be Cap’n Sav-A…we figured you needed the cape to go with it,” Eric teased. Ali pulled a red cape out of the bag with an “S” engraved on the back. All the fellows fell out laughing, except Wesley.

“Oh, okay, y’all got jokes, now. I see, I see.” Wesley looked at each one of the men.

“Wassup, brother? I hear you’ve got yourself a DV run away,” Ricky stated.

“Oh, so, that’s why you finally came to holla at yo’ peeps. We ain’t seen you in months, cuz that job keep you on lock down, and now you pop up. So, they sent you to rescue me?” Wesley teased back.

Ricky nodded his head. “Man, they desperate and hoping I can talk some sense into you.”

“And you figure you can, huh?” Wesley asked, looking at his friend, Ricky.

“Yeah, boy. We ain’t tryna’ have you go out like that. We ain’t ready to lose our boy. ‘Specially not over no woman.” Ricky shook his head.

“Man, I’m like Everlast; I ain’t going nowhere.” Wesley patted his hand against his chest.

“I hear ya, man, but that ain’t what James said. He told us you losing it, man. Wassup with you going to ol’ girl’s apartment, staking it out to see her man? What was you gon’ do, boy? You can’t roll up on nobody like that, especially when you ain’t got yo’ boys having yo’ back. You don’t know what you rolling up into. What if ol’ dude was packing heat? Then what? And the saddest part about it, man, she gonna be sittin’ up here, talking ‘bout how things got out of hand and she didn’t mean for it to go down like that. Do you really think we gon’ be tryin’ to hear that? You forgot about my ordeal, huh?” Ricky asked.

Ali, Eric, and James sat quietly while the two men engaged in the conversation.

“Na’ll, man, I ain’t forgot,” Wesley mumbled quietly, feeling like a chastised child.

“Good, and don’t you ever forget. Cuz when Gina’s husband, Doug, came up in my place and shot me cuz his woman wouldn’t come back home, I thought my life was over. Not because he shot to kill, cuz he didn’t. I was hurt, boy. I lost my damn mind during those months. I couldn’t believe she gave him the key I had given her and let this dude walk up in my place like that. She didn’t even call to warn me. When he left her job that day headed to my crib, she didn’t do shit. She just let it go down, talkin’ ‘bout he said he was just coming to talk to me. Kinda shit is that? Then to top it off, she go back home to ‘im, talkin’ bout they gon’ work on they marriage. Then she had the nerve to be mad at me when his ass went down for that shit! Talkin’ ‘bout, I didn’t have to press charges. I didn’t. I ain’t no bitch ass nigga. I was going back for mine. Neighbors called the folks and told ‘em what happened. That’s how his ass got caught. I’m tellin’ you, ain’t no woman worth all that. I don’t care what her story is. If she can’t get a divorce first, she ain’t for you, man.”

“She a good girl though, man. She just need somebody to protect her.” Wesley knew his heart was gone. At this point, there wasn’t anything Wesley would not do to protect Nikki.

“That’s her husband, dawg. And that’s her story to you. You don’t know what they going through. She could be telling you anything. Heffas be scheming.” Eric chuckled.

“All I know is she can’t stay here,” James repeated.

The doorbell rang again at that moment and Ali popped up from his spot on the floor and went to answer it. When he opened the door, he rubbed his hands together, smiling, looking at her rear assets. He just needed her to turn around to make sure the face matched the rest of her.

“Good eeeveninng…what can I do for you!” he exclaimed as he rubbed his hands together.

Disappointment took over his features when she turned around sporting a swollen belly.

She smiled back at him and said, “I’m here to see Wesley.”

21 Days of Love!!! March Madness! I ain't feeling the love and you damned right that was mad! This ain't no sports team, this a blog! How she gon' just kick me out for two months? For real? People walking up in the shop, talking 'bout, "Tyrone, you been fired?" or "Ty, why we ain't reading your posts over at Chelle's Blog, no mo'? She got rid of you?"

Heffas, don't come at me like that! Ain't nobody fired this diva! I ain't going nowhere! But two months? Honey, please! I had time enough to look for another job in that two months. What's my new job? Sitting at home, being mad as hell!!! How she gon' let all them authors come up in here gallivanting sharing their love posts from their books, and not have me up in here. Honey, I can write a love scene that'll make yo' head spin like that girl in that Exorcist movie! By the time I finish with you, y'all will be praying for some holy oil!!!

Two months? Who kicks somebody off their blog for two months! You ain't paying me! I'm volunteering! Then I hear she's writing for these other two blogs as well. Hmph! Do it again, and I'm gonna go write for AmoreSpeaks! Yeah, I know I'll have to clean up my language, but I'll show Chelle a thing or two. Who does she think she is? You. Don't. Put. Ty. On. Hold!

Then I heard she had a book club appearance yesterday. I wasn't even invited! She could've dropped by the shop and shared an invite or two, with the rest of us. Mm-mm. She too good for that! Then I heard she was talking about everybody at the salon while she was in the meeting. But a big bird told me she glossed over me. I see you, boo. Well, I'm just gon' gloss over her appearance, and that's all I'm saying on that matter.

You know what! I'm not feeling this! I think I'm heading home for the day. I'm not even going back to the shop. So, divas if you need yo' do did, drop by on Saturday. I'm feeling a little spring feverish today and I need a few days to myself. Maybe, I'll be back next Tuesday...maybe I won't. You'll have to stop by to see.

Worth The Wait...

“There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, all things in succession. That which grows fast, withers as rapidly. That which grows slowly, endures.” – Josiah Gilbert Holland

We live in a society where we want everything delivered to us yesterday and we then complain yesterday's too late! This is especially true when it comes to success and seeing our dreams come true. I think about when I published my first novel, Reflections of Promises. In my mind I had arrived! I had written the book, actually a few books by then, and I had published it for the world to read.

Imagine when to my surprise, like plenty of new authors I'm finding, nothing happened. I remember walking through the parking lot into Kroger. I looked around at everyone thinking, they should know what I know! Then it hit me, no one would know that I had written a book if I did not tell the world. At that point the work began, building my platform, building relationships with my readers, creating a promotional plan, and all the other intricacies that goes into marketing and promoting your book.

Here we are almost four years later, and I'm much further along than I was back then, but not where I aspire to be. However, I have learned patience, perseverance, and most important I have learned that you have to put in the work. I understand the importance of building those relationships, not just for the sake of selling a book, but because my readers and other authors matter to me. I have met so many beautiful and supportive people through these last almost four years. The lessons I have learned along the way I will take with me for the remainder of this life my Heavenly Father blesses me with.

The most important lesson is that although it takes time to get to where I want to be, it's worth the road traveled. My stories, blogs posts, articles, and random thoughts shared are valuable lessons that I pray ministers to others and offer a word of encouragement and hope. What I'm building is strong, secure, and prepared to last a lifetime.

I don't compare myself to other authors or worry about how many novels I can push out in a certain amount of time. I take my experience, knowledge, and lessons learned and pour them into my works as I build my brand, striving to create a beautiful blend.

Whatever you're working towards, wait patiently, believing in yourself and knowing that it will come to pass. Don't rush the process because there are lessons to be learned along the way.

Fab Friday Feature, Empress Simone...

Picture
Hi Readers!!! We had fun these last two months off with 21 Days of Love and March Madness, but Fab Friday Feature is back! Today's guest is Empress Simone. Grab your favorite beverage and chair and curl up to read more...
Picture
CHELLE: Simone, welcome to the Beautifully Inspired Blog. You may be new to this blog, but perhaps not new to the readers. Let's get to the heart of the matter and give them some details they may not know about you. When it comes to writing would you say that you're a Plotter or Pantser?

SIMONE: I’m not even sure. If I had to pick I’d say plotter.

CHELLE: Tell us a little about yourself? Who is Empress Simone the woman?

SIMONE:  As a child, I was born addicted to heroin. I overcame that by being an honor roll student in Catholic school since first grade and having a loving step-mom and father. As an adult, I’m a mom who battles bipolar every day. I’m not ashamed of it. My life circumstances have led me on this path and by the Grace of God I have survived being raped as a child as well as being born addicted to drugs. While my life reads like a novel, it’s not and there are times when I’d say it’s not worth it. However, I hang in there every day. I accomplish my school task and my writing and work tasks only to show and say I am proudly a new self-published author who has published 9 books (and counting as I have 2 new releases in the next upcoming week or two). I am also a radio host of ‘The Tea Live Hosted by Empress Simone’ which is due to end its first season with the last show on May 31, 2016. And finally I just published a literary magazine affectionately titled ‘Strictly for My People: An Urban Literary Magazine’. While I toiled with the thought of not even publishing my magazine, I knew I had to when faced with adversity and after a lady who I thought was a friend.  I have a testimony and not a sob story. I push through adversity toward my goals while telling my story because I want everyone to know they may encounter these type of hardships but don’t worry God always hand his children the victory. Stay strong.

CHELLE: Simone, I must say you have overcome quite a bit of adversity. And pursuing your dreams definitely inspires others out there who have obstacles to overcome in life. You obviously have a lot on your plate. How do you create work and life balance being an author?

SIMONE: My strategy is that I don’t have one. I don’t adhere to any set routine. I’m too fickle for that. I create my balance by performing the tasks as the need either arises or the opportunity presents itself. I network with others in an attempt to lighten the load and help them along their journey as I go along with mine. I feel it’s my purpose to help others after being stagnant in my own career for so long. I can see that’s exactly what I am called to do even if it seems as if no one notices me or my work, I am a hundred percent happy that I have helped someone accomplish their goals.

CHELLE: Describe a day around your house and in your ordinary life where writing is not key.

SIMONE: For me writing is key almost every day. Even if it’s just to write one line on a notepad. I’m allowed to do this because my children are grown. They help out by doing some of the chores even cooking. I however must do the cleaning since I like it a certain way they never seem to grasp the knowledge of how to do it.

CHELLE: I can relate to that. My children aren't grown, but it seems as if we're always correcting the way they perform their chores. Simone, most authors have a routine they settle into when they prepare to write. Yet, others toss routine out the window and go with the flow. Tell us about your writing routine.

SIMONE: My routine is to have lots of coffee and silence. Then and only then can I write.

CHELLE: Silence. I like that. Pandora or I Heart? What would we find on your playlist?

SIMONE: Pandora. You’d find ‘So Gone’ by Monica and ‘Almost doesn’t count’ by Brandy.
Definitely ‘Me, Myself and I ‘by Beyoncé and ‘I’m the only Woman’ ‘Be without you’ and ‘Sweet Memories’ by Mary J. Blige.

CHELLE: You have some great artists there. Did you keep a journal or diary as a child growing up? If so, what secret did you not want your parents to read?

SIMONE: Yes, I did keep a journal. I had a crush on a neighborhood guy is the secret I wanted to keep to myself.

CHELLE: What genre do you write and why? What authors have influenced your writing?

SIMONE:  I love to write Street Lit Novels. It’s just something I love to do. I like to think of myself as an action writer. If I could I’d bring my books to life via movie screens or web series. I love Frederick Douglass, Terry McMillan, E. Lynn Harris, Nikki Turner, Kendal Banks, Mykal Malone, Terri Woods and Kwan. They all have inspired me during different periods of my life when I have needed it most.

CHELLE: Terry is one of my favorites as well. If you could pair up with another author to write, who would you choose and why?

SIMONE: I’d pair up with Terry McMillan or Kendal Banks. Terry would be because she writes a lot about heart break and I’ve experienced a lot of heart break. Kendal would be because she solidified my decision amongst other reasons to shop my manuscript around.

CHELLE: I'm glad you brought that up. Why did you decide to switch from traditional publishing to indie?

SIMONE: I  had different ideas than what the publisher had for his own company. He wanted to grow and become a powerhouse. I like to remain small and with the ladies already signed. I finished my contracted 5 books and left. I was going to sign again but thought I should try this on my own. I like being on my own. I'm my own boss, I make my own deadlines and I get to work with those I'm comfortable with.

CHELLE: I think more and more authors are going that route. If your latest release were turned into a movie, what actors would you select to play the starring roles, and what music would comprise the soundtrack?

SIMONE: I love Taral Hicks she would have to play an extra or something. The character might call for a younger actor so I’d go with Kiki Palmer, Drew Sidora would play the main character’s friend and cell mate. For male roles, Jesse Williams, Idris Elba and Maino (the rapper). The music that would comprise the soundtrack would be Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, Keke Wyatt, and 702, Missy Elliot, Biggie Smalls, Uncle Murda, Luther Vandross and Drake.

CHELLE: Kiki is a phenomenal actress. I have enjoyed watching the depth of her talent grow through the years. Idris seems to be on all the writers' list of actors to select. (Laughing). There I go straying again. Anyhoo, we all encounter it from time to time. Some fear it, others walk all over it. Tell us about you. How do you handle the dreaded writer’s block?

SIMONE: I reread my story.  I change little details about the novel in hopes that it flows. I usually do this from my windows phone. So far it has worked.

CHELLE: Excellent tips. Thanks for sharing, Simone. Mountains or the beach?

SIMONE: The beach of course.

CHELLE: Provide one marketing tip for upcoming authors that has worked for you.

SIMONE: One marketing tip is to promote in the groups on Facebook.

CHELLE: If there was one thing you would want your readers to know after reading your works, what would it be?

SIMONE: I always try and bring up a taboo issue within the Black community in the hopes it will open up a dialogue in changing a person’s perspective. For instance my days with bipolar are sometimes implemented in my story, my mother’s battle with AIDS is also a subject I reference. My hope is that people will stop thinking that certain issues mean someone is crazy. I’m highly intelligent and made the Dean’s list this past fall, I have 9 plus novels under my belt. It’s an emotional issue but being born addicted to drugs will do that to a person. I like to call awareness to those who might be treating a loved one different and let them know that people with issues will always have issues if they are not talked about and addressed to bring forth solutions. Also I like to show a lot of action in my writing and not everyone can be trusted. Some will seek to harm you and despite this fact you can overcome it. I also try to show the beauty of researching our ancestors by giving my character names of the ancestors who have influenced or inspired me during my genealogy research.

CHELLE: That's beautiful, Simone. I love stories where everything is not always perfect. Art mimics life so to speak. In my mind we can really relate to those stories and have hope to overcome adversity. Writers often have to forsake time with friends and family when deadlines are looming, or the creative muse is flowing. What one person has been your greatest supporter on your publishing journey?

SIMONE: My sons have been my greatest supporters.

CHELLE: Simply sweet and outstanding! Sounds like you've raised great young men. With all of the activities you have going on, including being a mother, describe your idea of the perfect “me-time.”

SIMONE: The perfect me time is a pedicure and retail therapy fueled by lots of coffee.

CHELLE: Sounds like every girls' dream. On to the important question. Kobe or LeBron?

SIMONE: To be honest neither.

CHELLE: (Gasps, hand to her chest, eyes enlarges in disbelief). I am mortified, Simone! (Laughing). Okay, now that my diva drama moment of the day is over let's move forward. We live life beautifully inspired here, at The Beautifully Inspired Blog. Leave us with an inspirational post, comprised of three words.

SIMONE: As my life coach says ‘Perfect by Design.'
